Position Overview

We are seeking qualified candidates to teach in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at North Island College, in collaboration with Vancouver Island University.

This sessional teaching role, comprising up to 20% of the workload, focuses on the course NUR 414: Nursing Practice VIII – Transitioning to BSN Graduate, delivered in person to a group of BSN students. Practicum placements will occur in diverse healthcare environments and may necessitate travel. Applicants must possess reliable transportation.

Important Note: Candidates should have up-to-date clinical expertise and experience in areas such as Community Health, Adult Medicine, Adult Surgery, Mental Health, Geriatrics, and/or Maternal and Child Health.


The selected candidate will employ innovative strategies for the preparation and delivery of practical activities; take initiative in documenting and addressing student concerns; and demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills.

The schedule for this role will be adaptable to accommodate the program's requirements.


Faculty members at North Island College are tasked with realizing the institution's vision, goals, and objectives in relation to teaching and learning.

Additionally, they are expected to serve as exemplary role models for both students and colleagues.

The responsibilities outlined below represent a general job description for instructional faculty who may be responsible for delivering scheduled classes, supporting self-paced, online, and distance education, and/or supervising in laboratories and practicums.

Instructional Duties:
  • Prepare and organize educational materials for instructional settings;
  • Utilize diverse teaching methods and resources to cater to various learning styles;
  • Instruct in designated subject areas, ensuring all necessary content is included in course outlines;
  • Guide student learning in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere;
  • Maintain regular availability for students during designated office and classroom hours to discuss academic progress and other relevant issues;
  • Clearly articulate learning outcomes for programs and courses, along with assessment methods;
  • Design and implement evaluations of student performance, keeping students informed of their progress;
  • Submit grades promptly, adhering to institutional policies;
  • Maintain accurate records of student enrollment and performance, submitting necessary documentation at the conclusion of employment.
Professional Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to College educational policies;
  • Engage with the College's educational and strategic plans, contributing to their development and success;
  • Notify the Department Chair of required materials to ensure adequate resources for courses;
  • Provide input on enrollment management strategies to the Department Chair;
  • Report any health and safety concerns to the appropriate authorities;
  • Demonstrate proficiency in relevant computer applications for teaching;
  • Pursue ongoing professional development in the field;
  • Actively participate in College committees and community activities;
  • Attend departmental meetings and contribute to departmental initiatives;
  • Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned by the College when feasible.
Qualifications:
  • Master's degree required, with at least one degree in Nursing;
  • Doctorate preferred;
  • Experience in adult education, particularly at the postsecondary level;
  • Current registration with BCCNM (including Criminal Record check);
  • Current CPR certification at the HCP level.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Minimum of two years of full-time experience (within the last five years) in one or more of the following practice areas: Community Health, Adult Medicine, Adult Surgery, Mental Health, Geriatrics, and/or Maternal and Child Health;
  • Experience or interest in Indigenous health and/or global health is advantageous;
  • Ability to employ a variety of engaging teaching methods to enhance learning in both classroom and online settings;
  • Demonstrated teamwork abilities and effective collaboration skills;
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with the capacity to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines;
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills;
  • Commitment to evidence-informed practice and scholarly activities;
  • Familiarity with online learning management systems, such as D2L Brightspace, is beneficial;
  • Proficiency in computer applications, internet use, and MS Office software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams;
  • A valid BC driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle are required.
