Nuclear Engineering Lead

The Target Delivery System Engineering Lead position provides technical leadership for a multidisciplinary engineering team supporting the Target Delivery System (TDS) maintenance and operations at Darlington NPGS. The team is accountable for the safe and reliable operation of the TDS, encompassing design, development, operational support, reliability enhancements, preventative/predictive maintenance planning, outage support, and field and installation activities. The engineering team will be accountable to the overall system health and will be comprised of Responsible System Engineers (RSEs) including mechanical, electrical, systems, and software functions. The Engineering Lead acts as the single point of contact for technical items with the customer interface. The Target Delivery System is a first-of-a-kind nuclear piping system that incorporates automation and process controls to irradiate Molybdenum targets in an operating reactor.
Responsibilities- Leadership of a multifunctional engineering team to maintain the operational requirements of TDS, including daily support to operations, conducting required design changes, and executing maintenance (planned/unplanned).
- Facilitating proper plans and schedules (level 3) with individual contributors and ownership of the cost/schedule commitments of your team.
- Creating and enforcing the use of Task Definition Forms (TDFs) for work assignments.
- Actively participating with the TDS Manager in resource planning, recruitment, interviewing, and onboarding.
- Contributing directly to the support of the system, with knowledge of the design and design change process.
- Responding to production concerns, leading the cross-functional team through effective problem-solving, troubleshooting, and decision-making.
- Interfacing with key partner resources: Laurentis Energy Partners, OPG operations, BWXT Medical operations, and BWXT Field Services.
- Providing support for parts and kits supply and for the execution of regular maintenance, including portions that may take place during a reactor outage.
- Providing immediate response to unplanned maintenance, with 24/7 support required in response to issues affecting planned production.
- Participating in and leading internal and external meetings, such as design reviews, preparing and presenting technical data.
- Providing technical direction/decisions and oversight of design activities, including technical review and verification of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
- Maintaining detailed knowledge of the nuclear codes and standards applicable to the Canadian Nuclear environment.
- Leading by example, ensuring compliance and adherence to processes (including internal Business Management System), industry codes and standards, quality systems, policies, and contractual requirements.
- Providing assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
- Travel (approximately 30%) will be required, with the core support team stationed in Peterborough, Ontario, and the TDS operated in Clarington, Ontario.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Systems, Nuclear, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Holds or is in the process of obtaining a valid PEO license.
- Experience with the Target Delivery System design, fabrication, and assembly or operation is considered an asset.
- Typically requires 5 to 10 years' experience in design or manufacturing engineering in Nuclear, Aerospace, Mining, Oil and Gas, or other highly regulated and process-based design.
- Typically requires 3 years' experience in design or manufacturing environment, with proven success in a leadership role.
- Demonstrable experience with project schedules, working within budgets, financial metrics, and other project management methodologies.
- Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, systems, I&C, software design, and manufacturing is considered an asset.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, understandable by a diverse audience.
- Creative problem-solving skills, outstanding analytical abilities, demonstrated leadership skills, strong technical experience, and the ability to work in a team.
- Experience with 3D CAD software (preference for Inventor/Solidworks).
- Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry, with strong preference for on-site experience at a nuclear operating plant. Valid security clearance, orange badge, Vendor MTL, and Vendor DTL qualifications are considered assets.
- Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
- Familiarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.
- Familiarity with risk-based modification process, including a general understanding of Engineering Change Control concepts in the nuclear industry.
