About the Role

Canadian Blood Services is seeking a Regular Full-time Senior Medical Laboratory Technologist to become part of our dynamic Testing team.

The Testing team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by performing routine assessments, along with other relevant laboratory responsibilities. In this position, you will manage reagents, oversee equipment maintenance, validation, document management, and assist Quality Assurance with compliance activities related to maintaining accreditation. You will collaborate with the Medical Officer, Charge Technologists, Trainer, and Equipment Services to provide program support and work with Quality Assurance to ensure that the Diagnostic Services Laboratories operate within current Health Canada, Manitoba Quality Assurance Program (MANQAP), CAP, and AABB standards.

Formula for Success
  • Ensure quality standards within the Diagnostic Services Laboratories by assisting with reagent management.
  • Conduct assessments of reagents prior to utilization.
  • Handle tasks associated with recalls and/or reagent notifications.
  • Communicate with reagent vendors to resolve supply and shipment issues.
  • Facilitate assessments to classify reagents or supplies as critical.
  • Maintain quality standards within the Diagnostic Services Laboratories by monitoring equipment upkeep.
  • Ensure scheduled instrument preventative maintenance is conducted.
  • Follow up on overdue maintenance and initiate Quality Events as necessary.
  • Perform instrument verifications and calibrations as required.
  • Engage in document management tasks.
  • Assist with quality assurance and validation activities.
  • Support CAP application and re-application preparation as needed.
  • Collect data for quality indicator reporting.
  • Conduct laboratory-specific root cause analysis of Quality Events as required.
Desired Education and Skills
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technology training program with certification from the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required.
  • Current registration with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Manitoba (CMLTM) is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of relevant laboratory experience is required.
  • Completion of the ISTP training program is required.
  • Experience or training in Quality Systems, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), or Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) is preferred.
  • Previous experience implementing validation protocols is an asset.
  • A strong understanding of CAP requirements and Health Canada, AABB, and ASHI Standards, and their applications is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in statistical process control is preferred.
  • Experience participating in quality audits and process reviews is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong command of the English language.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, demonstrating sound judgment, tact, and discretion when interacting with others.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, capable of managing multiple tasks and competing priorities within tight timelines.
  • Ability to generalize and conceptualize ideas and information and to utilize and adapt technical processes based on a broad understanding of principles.
  • Strong analytical skills coupled with effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Actively promotes the importance of team cohesiveness and pride in delivering a superior level of service.

What You Can Expect
  • Shifts and hours will vary; flexibility is required to accommodate assigned shifts based on operational needs.
  • The job requires periods (2 or more hours duration) of sitting, standing, walking, and lifting supplies and equipment that may exceed 10 kg throughout the regular work schedule. The position may require equipment assembly involving stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting for moderate periods (1 to 2 hours duration).
