Main Purpose and Function
The position of Shelter Attendant I is integral to the operations of The Gathering Place operated Shelter. Reporting to the Shelter Supervisor or Coordinator, the role focuses on providing guidance and support to individuals seeking shelter. The Shelter Attendant plays a vital role in ensuring a safe and inviting atmosphere for those experiencing homelessness, including individuals facing challenges related to substance use, mental health, and other socio-economic issues.
This front-line role involves a range of responsibilities aimed at meeting the basic needs of guests, such as shelter and nourishment. The Shelter Attendant is tasked with facilitating referrals to additional services, overseeing guest behavior, managing incidents, and employing de-escalation techniques to maintain a secure environment. Responsibilities also include monitoring shelter access, enforcing established policies, performing routine cleaning duties, and maintaining accurate records and reports.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee the setup and breakdown of shelter operations, ensuring effective supervision during overnight hours.
- Address problems that arise overnight in the absence of a supervisor, collaborating with external organizations as necessary.
- Foster a safe and positive environment for staff, volunteers, and shelter guests.
- Create a welcoming atmosphere sensitive to the needs of marginalized populations.
- Engage compassionately with individuals facing challenges related to substance use, homelessness, and mental health.
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with staff, volunteers, and patrons.
- Exhibit professionalism that reflects the values of the City of Vancouver.
- Ensure compliance with shelter policies and procedures, communicating concerns effectively.
- Handle unpredictable situations with respect and confidence, particularly those involving mental health and addiction.
- Regularly monitor shelter access and maintain oversight of the environment and guests.
- Utilize security equipment as necessary, including two-way radios and CCTV systems.
- Keep accurate records, including incident reports and attendance logs.
- Perform necessary cleaning duties to maintain a hygienic environment.
- Administer basic first aid and maintain relevant documentation.
- Facilitate referrals to community services as needed.
- Report any facility-related issues, including maintenance and cleanliness concerns.
- Demonstrate teamwork and collaboration with colleagues.
- Complete additional tasks as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Completion of grade ten, preferably with Occupational First Aid Level 1, alongside relevant experience in a security or social services role, particularly with vulnerable populations.
- Basic Security Training (BST) Level 1 is considered an asset.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- In-depth knowledge of the center's operations and programs.
- Familiarity with local community and social service agencies.
- Commitment to supporting individuals experiencing homelessness and related challenges.
- Strong conflict resolution and de-escalation skills in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent decision-making abilities in emergency contexts.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office for report writing and communication.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment independently.
- Willingness to enforce policies with compassion and firmness.
- Knowledge of homelessness-related services is advantageous.
