Director of Campus Advocacy Initiatives

About Hillel Ontario

Hillel Ontario stands as the largest Hillel organization globally, serving nine universities with a collective Jewish student body of 14,000. We celebrate religious and political diversity within an inclusive atmosphere, supporting a wide array of identities as students develop intellectually, socially, and spiritually. Our mission is to empower students to make a significant impact on the future of the Jewish community and the world. Through innovative campus programming, leadership training, transformative experiences, and educational initiatives, Hillel inspires the next generation of Jewish leaders to commit to Jewish life, learning, and Israel.

Role Overview

In collaboration with the Hillel Ontario Advocacy Task Force, the Director of Campus Advocacy Initiatives will enhance the organization's advocacy agenda for Israel and Jewish issues at universities beyond our current scope. Partnering with Hillel's campus directors throughout the province, this role is crucial in addressing advocacy matters at universities without Hillel staff, both proactively and reactively. The Director will recruit, convene, and mobilize a group of Jewish students, equipping them with the necessary support and resources to become effective advocates on their campuses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Hillel Ontario Advocacy Task Force and senior leadership to develop and execute Hillel Ontario's advocacy strategy on campuses.
  • Support advocacy efforts at emerging campuses lacking Hillel representation.
  • Assist student leaders in their advocacy endeavors by identifying specific goals and implementing strategies with measurable objectives in partnership with the advocacy team.
  • Work effectively with other Jewish and/or Israel advocacy organizations on campus to advance Hillel's strategic advocacy goals and strengthen inter-organizational relationships.
  • Engage students in joint learning, campaigns, and events.
  • Elevate and amplify student voices and perspectives.
  • Create, lead, and report on provincial advocacy campaigns aimed at countering antisemitism and promoting Israel.
  • Regularly visit campuses to train and empower students in their advocacy roles and encourage political engagement.
  • Mentor students to enhance their advocacy skills and effectiveness.
  • Provide monthly updates on antisemitic and anti-Zionist activities within their assigned campuses.
  • Proactively monitor social media platforms.
  • Build strategic relationships with university personnel, including Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Security, and Student Affairs.
  • Engage both Jewish and non-Jewish students interested in advocacy and cultivate strategic partnerships with various campus stakeholders and organizations.

Qualifications

The Director of Campus Advocacy Initiatives is a strategic thinker with both formal and informal experience in Jewish and Israel advocacy. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of the challenges faced by Jewish students on Ontario campuses and be knowledgeable in the principles of advocacy and activism. They will demonstrate high emotional intelligence, excel in building and maintaining relationships, and collaborate effectively in a complex, geographically diverse environment. Professionalism in all interactions, both internal and external, is essential, as is a commitment to educational and engagement excellence as outlined in the Strategic Plan.

Education and Experience:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant field (Master's preferred).
  • Over 5 years of experience in a Jewish advocacy role.
  • At least 3 years of demonstrated leadership and mentorship experience.
  • Significant involvement with university administration, political organizing, or campus life, with a clear understanding of campus dynamics.
  • Ability to take initiative, drive the advocacy agenda, and collaborate with team members across various locations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative team-oriented approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and troubleshoot effectively under pressure.
  • Knowledge and experience in network management and social media.
  • Capability to build meaningful relationships with staff, university students, and community members.
  • Skills in community organizing, campaigning, and programming.
  • Ability to maintain composure and clear thinking during crises.
  • Energy, versatility, flexibility, and maturity.

Additional Information:

  • Preference will be given to candidates based in Toronto.
  • Attention to detail and a focus on deadlines and advocacy outcomes are essential.
  • Work may occur in environments with varying levels of activity, noise, and lighting.
  • Meetings may frequently occur via conference call.
  • The ability to thrive in a multi-priority environment and a commitment to working beyond regular hours as needed is critical.

What We Offer

  • A competitive salary ranging from $80,000 to $85,000 annually.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, vision and dental coverage, life insurance, and Long-Term Disability (LTD).
  • Generous paid time off, including 15 vacation days, 2 Mental Health/Wellness days, and 10 paid sick days, in addition to paid Jewish and statutory holidays.
  • A flexible and hybrid work environment.
  • An opportunity to make a direct and lasting impact on the lives of Jewish and non-Jewish students within a community of dedicated professionals.
