About the Faculty

The University of Alberta nanoFAB is a premier technical service facility with a $100M investment, focused on micro/nanoscale fabrication and characterization. As a trust-funded and revenue-generating unit within the Faculty of Engineering, it aims for both administrative and financial sustainability. The nanoFAB serves a diverse clientele, including over 300 academic and industrial groups, facilitating advancements in sensors, photonics, biotechnology, energy, materials, and quantum technologies through micro and nano-scale techniques.

This position is tailored for candidates eager to engage in a dynamic environment, enhancing their skills to provide exceptional support to researchers and companies on their academic and commercial ventures.

Role Responsibilities

The Characterization Research Specialist will independently manage and oversee characterization capabilities, equipment, procedures, and policies, delivering technical and developmental expertise to meet the needs of the nanoFAB's academic and industrial clients. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Independently operating and providing technical oversight for various characterization tools, including Scanning Electron Microscopy, AFM, X-ray microscopy, and others.
  2. Leading the evaluation and interpretation of data, suggesting technical directions, and providing guidance on specialized techniques.
  3. Planning, executing, and documenting new tool installations and upgrades, while recommending changes to enhance operational efficiency.
  4. Delivering educational support for technical courses and contributing to fee-for-service projects as needed.
  5. Acting as the primary technical contact for operational support on assigned tools, facilitating technical discussions with clients and vendors.

Qualifications

  1. M.Sc. or PhD in Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  2. A minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience with characterization tools such as SEM, AFM, XRM, and others.
  3. Experience with related microscopy and spectroscopy techniques is advantageous.
  4. Strong public speaking and technical writing skills, including the ability to deliver presentations and create technical documentation.
