About the Faculty

The nanoFAB at the University of Alberta is a premier technical service facility with a focus on micro and nanoscale fabrication and characterization. As a revenue-generating unit within the Faculty of Engineering, it is committed to sustainability while serving a wide array of researchers and companies in fields such as sensors, biotechnology, energy, and materials science.

The nanoFAB supports a vibrant community of over 300 academic and industrial groups, empowering them to develop new technologies at the smallest scales. This position is ideal for candidates eager to work in a dynamic environment, enhancing their skills to provide exceptional support to researchers and businesses.

Role Responsibilities

The Characterization Research Specialist will independently manage and oversee characterization capabilities, equipment, and procedures, providing essential technical expertise to meet the needs of the nanoFAB's academic and industrial clientele. Key responsibilities include:

  1. Operating and maintaining characterization tools such as Scanning Electron Microscopy, AFM, X-ray microscopy, and more.
  2. Conducting diagnostics, optimization, calibration, and documentation of equipment.
  3. Leading the evaluation and interpretation of data collected, advising on technical directions and methodologies.
  4. Planning and executing new tool installations and upgrades, ensuring operational efficiency.
  5. Providing educational support for technical courses and contributing to fee-for-service projects.

Qualifications

  1. A Master's or PhD in Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  2. A minimum of two years of hands-on experience with characterization tools.
  3. Strong public speaking and technical writing skills, including the ability to deliver presentations and create technical documentation.
