Role Overview:

The DOPES Support Worker plays a crucial role in delivering low-barrier, harm reduction services to individuals and communities that face barriers to equitable health care. This position involves operating drop-in and overdose prevention services, while also supporting the daily functions of various specialized teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Deliver a variety of harm reduction services to individuals in supportive housing and shelter environments, including the distribution and recovery of essential supplies.
  2. Collaborate with internal teams to facilitate access to harm reduction resources and provide follow-up support.
  3. Conduct training sessions on overdose response and safer substance use practices.
  4. Utilize assessment and crisis intervention skills to address immediate needs and refer clients to appropriate health and support services.
  5. Monitor clients using substances, assess for overdose symptoms, and respond appropriately, including administering naloxone as needed.
  6. Engage clients through a collaborative, person-centered approach that emphasizes harm reduction principles.
  7. Ensure the safety of program spaces by adhering to violence prevention protocols and responding to critical incidents.
  8. Develop safety plans for individuals at increased risk of overdose.
  9. Maintain accurate client records and documentation of incidents as required.
  10. Support peer-led initiatives through training and capacity building.
  11. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in health or social services or equivalent experience.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in harm reduction service delivery.
  • First Aid certification and experience in overdose response.
  • Training in non-violent and anti-oppressive crisis intervention techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of local health and social service resources.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are preferred.
  • Ability to engage respectfully with Indigenous communities and apply a trauma-informed perspective.
  • Understanding of harm reduction principles and health promotion frameworks.
  • Capacity to work in diverse environments, including outdoor settings.
  • Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to adapt to a self-directed work environment and respond flexibly to community needs.
