Job Summary

The Smart Grid Engineer is responsible for assessing, developing, and enhancing new and existing technologies used to support the efficient operations of Hydro Ottawa's distribution grid.

Main Responsibilities
  • Identify and develop solutions that enhance the use of Grid Technology systems and applications.
  • Provide technical support to the Grid Technology Support, stations, and distribution field staff.
  • Evaluate and manage new Grid Technology projects.
  • Create analysis work flows and associated business processes for the benefit of customer departments.
  • Assist in setting strategic direction for Grid Technology systems and applications.
  • Participate in the development of Hydro Ottawa's smart grid roadmap.
  • Support the development and use of data analytics to improve grid efficiency and maximize distribution asset life.
  • Work co-operatively with other technology teams to enhance system and application functionality, availability, and security.
  • Prepare budget briefs for projects and participate in overall budget and business planning processes.
  • Provide input into system planning and distribution system standards and technology standards.
  • Evaluate new technology, software, and equipment.
  • Assist with managing and coordinating the successful completion of special projects as required.
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
  • Professional Engineer, licensed or able to be licensed in the province of Ontario.
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in the use of office productivity and collaboration tools, preferably G Suite.
  • Experience in an electric utility engineering environment considered an asset.
  • Project Management and/or PMP Certification considered an asset.
  • Experience with advanced grid applications (SCADA, ADMS, OMS, GIS) considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of Fibre Optic communications technology (including planning and management considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of wireless communications technology (LTE, fixed point-to-point, point-to-multipoint) considered an asset.
  • English essential, both oral and written; Bilingual (French/English) considered an asset.
