Education Assistant for the Visually Impaired

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Education Assistant to join our team at School District #39 (Vancouver). As an Education Assistant for the Visually Impaired, you will play a vital role in supporting students with visual impairments to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement individualized programs and contracts for students with visual impairments
- Evaluate and maintain records of student progress, collaborating with team members to make informed decisions
- Organize and participate in a variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational, and craft activities
- Support students in community-based programming, such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
- Provide emotional support and guidance to students with social and emotional challenges
- Supervise students as required, addressing disciplinary issues promptly and effectively
- Prepare instructional aid materials, set up and operate instructional aid equipment, and scan and convert documents into accessible formats
- Create tactile materials and adapt curriculum as needed
- Provide school and student support to assist the school as assigned
- Completion of Grade 12 and successful completion of a Special Education Assistant program or related field, with over two months of experience
- Experience supporting students with visual impairments and knowledge of the basic principles of Unified English Braille code is preferred
- Formal training in childcare/child development, behavior management, and/or social sciences
- Related experience working with students who are mentally/emotionally and/or physically challenged
- Sound knowledge of the issues and needs in educating students with intellectual, behavioral, and/or physical challenges
- Sound knowledge of educational/developmental psychology and behavior management
- Ability to effectively assist educators in behavior management, individual skill development, and the integration process
- Ability to provide personal assistance to meet students' requirements
- Ability to lift and position students of varying weights
- Knowledge of braille software and experience using an iPad with VoiceOver and Brailliant is an asset
- Must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid (OFA) certificate
- A competitive hourly rate of $32.62/hour (6.5 hours/day)
