Position Overview:

This is a temporary full-time position for a duration of 10 months.

We are seeking a dynamic and innovative individual to enhance our communications strategies.

As a Senior Communications Specialist with the County of Grande Prairie, you will collaborate with various stakeholders, including employees, community members, and elected officials, to design and execute comprehensive communications strategies utilizing diverse creative approaches. In this role, you will be part of a dedicated team of communications and marketing professionals, allowing you to focus on specific areas of expertise and make a meaningful contribution.

About the Role:

The Communications & Marketing department is committed to safeguarding and promoting the municipality's image while supporting its strategic objectives and operational initiatives. Our team is responsible for delivering corporate communication services, which encompass internal and external communications planning, media relations, crisis communication, marketing, brand management, and digital engagement. Additionally, we provide communication support to the County Council as part of our corporate services.

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Marketing, the Senior Communications Specialist will offer strategic guidance on complex communication challenges, projects, and initiatives, ensuring that no two days are alike.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and assess integrated strategic communications and public engagement plans that align with the corporate business strategy.
  • Proactively manage change while fostering understanding of politically and organizationally sensitive initiatives.
  • Create effective tactics to execute communications and public engagement strategies.
  • Craft messaging on intricate corporate matters, including sensitive and confidential topics.
  • Establish and evaluate metrics using various analytical tools to assess the effectiveness of communications strategies.
  • Provide strategic communications advice to Senior Leadership and County Council during real and potential challenges.
  • Engage in a collaborative approach to crisis communications.
  • Build and maintain strong media relationships through proactive and reactive media engagement.
  • Coach staff and Council members as spokespersons to effectively communicate key messages and address public concerns.
  • Offer strategic consultation and guidance to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Provide daily expertise and support to fellow Communications and Marketing team members.
  • Foster respectful and productive relationships within and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrate accountability by adhering to approved budgets, identifying issues, and proposing solutions while understanding client needs and reporting on outcomes.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess a post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field, along with three to five years of experience in a communications role. Experience in a fast-paced environment, such as an agency or client-facing role, is preferred. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may also be considered.

  • Experience in a municipal government setting is advantageous.
  • Membership in professional organizations such as IABC or CPRS is a plus.
  • A proven track record of developing and managing impactful communications plans that achieve desired outcomes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Canadian Press Style guidelines.
  • Advanced writing and editing skills tailored to diverse audiences (e.g., senior management, employees).
  • Certification in Information Officer and Incident Command System is beneficial.
  • Training in public engagement strategies and tactics.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver professional presentations.
  • Exceptional writing, proofreading, and editing capabilities.
  • Strong organizational, research, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage workload efficiently.
  • Creative, critical, and strategic thinking skills.
  • A good sense of humor.

Compensation:

The County of Grande Prairie offers a competitive compensation package.

Work Schedule:

This position features a hybrid, 35-hour work week with overtime compensation.
