Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Wildland Fire Mitigation Planner to join our team at Halifax Regional Municipality. As a key member of our planning department, you will play a critical role in developing and implementing strategies to mitigate the risk of wildland fires in our urban areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with municipal planning staff to review and approve residential development and land use plans, ensuring they align with our wildland fire mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement fire risk reduction plans for high-risk areas, including the identification of potential fire hazards and the development of mitigation strategies.
  • Work closely with emergency management officials to ensure that our wildland fire mitigation plans are integrated into our overall emergency response strategy.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to municipal staff on wildland fire mitigation and risk reduction.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including local residents, businesses, and community groups, to educate them on wildland fire mitigation and risk reduction.
  • Conduct site visits and assessments to identify potential fire hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and implement public education and outreach programs to raise awareness about wildland fire mitigation and risk reduction.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including parks and recreation, to develop and implement wildland fire mitigation plans for our parks and green spaces.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary education in a related field, such as urban planning, geography, or environmental science.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in wildland fire mitigation or a related field.
  • Knowledge of wildland fire behavior, fire risk reduction strategies, and emergency management principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with a strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
