Position Overview

Mount Allison University is seeking a dedicated and versatile Access Services Assistant for the R.P. Bell Library. Reporting to the Head of Access Services and Interlibrary Loan, this role involves collaborating within a team to manage the daily functions of the Access Services Department. Key responsibilities include delivering exceptional front-line service to students, faculty, staff, and the public; accurately maintaining patron and bibliographic records; preparing and updating course reserves in both print and digital formats; managing stacks and collections; and engaging with fellow library team members on various projects and initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Execute daily operations of the Access Services department, including addressing patron account inquiries and circulation questions, performing stacks maintenance, and processing library materials throughout the circulation workflow.
  2. Act as the initial point of contact for library patrons, providing warm and knowledgeable service in person, online, and via phone; resolve or direct inquiries using sound judgment and established protocols.
  3. Deliver a broad range of services utilizing the Integrated Library System (ILS) in accordance with established rules and guidelines.
  4. Oversee inventory and ensure that non-traditional circulating items (such as laptops, chargers, whiteboards, etc.) are maintained in optimal condition.
  5. Offer basic troubleshooting assistance for library technologies including computers, copiers, and scanners.
  6. Safeguard patron privacy in all transactions.
  7. Assist in training and supervising student assistants.
  8. Manage the Library's course reserve services, which includes receiving and processing course reserves, liaising with faculty regarding course materials, and understanding Canadian copyright as it pertains to library reserves.
  9. Accurately and securely process financial transactions.
  10. Provide clerical support to librarians and archivists.
  11. Perform technical tasks related to cataloging library materials.
  12. Ensure the building is opened and closed securely, maintaining the safety of library users and resources.
  13. Collect and maintain statistics on building usage.
  14. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills

  1. Library Technician's Diploma or a University degree, or a relevant combination of coursework and experience in a library setting, preferably in an academic context.
  2. Strong customer service focus with the ability to effectively engage with patrons, including students, staff, and faculty.
  3. Experience in digitizing materials is considered an asset.
  4. Proficient technical skills; experience with an Integrated Library System is highly preferred.
  5. Familiarity with library services, resources, and proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., MS Word and Excel).
  6. Excellent organizational abilities and a keen attention to detail.
  7. Capability to work independently, exercise good judgment, solve problems, prioritize tasks, and switch between multiple responsibilities.
