Position Overview
Mount Allison University is seeking a dedicated and versatile Access Services Assistant for the R.P. Bell Library. Reporting to the Head of Access Services and Interlibrary Loan, this role involves collaborating within a team to manage the daily functions of the Access Services Department. Key responsibilities include delivering exceptional front-line service to students, faculty, staff, and the public; accurately maintaining patron and bibliographic records; preparing and updating course reserves in both print and digital formats; managing stacks and collections; and engaging with fellow library team members on various projects and initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute daily operations of the Access Services department, including addressing patron account inquiries and circulation questions, performing stacks maintenance, and processing library materials throughout the circulation workflow.
- Act as the initial point of contact for library patrons, providing warm and knowledgeable service in person, online, and via phone; resolve or direct inquiries using sound judgment and established protocols.
- Deliver a broad range of services utilizing the Integrated Library System (ILS) in accordance with established rules and guidelines.
- Oversee inventory and ensure that non-traditional circulating items (such as laptops, chargers, whiteboards, etc.) are maintained in optimal condition.
- Offer basic troubleshooting assistance for library technologies including computers, copiers, and scanners.
- Safeguard patron privacy in all transactions.
- Assist in training and supervising student assistants.
- Manage the Library's course reserve services, which includes receiving and processing course reserves, liaising with faculty regarding course materials, and understanding Canadian copyright as it pertains to library reserves.
- Accurately and securely process financial transactions.
- Provide clerical support to librarians and archivists.
- Perform technical tasks related to cataloging library materials.
- Ensure the building is opened and closed securely, maintaining the safety of library users and resources.
- Collect and maintain statistics on building usage.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Library Technician's Diploma or a University degree, or a relevant combination of coursework and experience in a library setting, preferably in an academic context.
- Strong customer service focus with the ability to effectively engage with patrons, including students, staff, and faculty.
- Experience in digitizing materials is considered an asset.
- Proficient technical skills; experience with an Integrated Library System is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with library services, resources, and proficiency in word processing and spreadsheet software (e.g., MS Word and Excel).
- Excellent organizational abilities and a keen attention to detail.
- Capability to work independently, exercise good judgment, solve problems, prioritize tasks, and switch between multiple responsibilities.
- First Aid training.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
- Ability to perform physical tasks, including bending and lifting, and to safely handle and shelve heavy items.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, including evenings, weekends, and statutory holidays, as well as in inclement weather.
