Position Overview:

The Lead Urban Planner is responsible for managing intricate land use planning projects and initiatives within the organization. This role ensures that policies, regulations, and technical recommendations are adhered to in alignment with established legislative responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Directs a team of planning professionals in daily operations, ensuring clarity in priorities and expectations.
  • Manages the delivery of complex and politically sensitive planning files submitted for review under relevant legislation.
  • Provides expert planning advice and regulatory guidance to team members, clients, and applicants.
  • Engages in negotiations with stakeholders using a solutions-focused approach.
  • Prepares and presents reports to the governing board and advocates for recommendations in regulatory hearings.
  • Mentors team members and fosters their professional growth.
  • Promotes a workplace culture that values equity and inclusion.
  • Facilitates onboarding and conducts performance evaluations for staff.
  • Encourages a culture of continuous improvement by identifying training and resource enhancement opportunities.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • A degree in Planning, Environmental Studies, Urban Studies, Geography, or a related discipline.
  • Registered Professional Planner designation and membership with relevant professional organizations.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years in municipal or environmental planning.
  • At least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.

Skills and Competencies:

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant planning legislation and policies.
  • Proven ability to identify and resolve issues effectively.
  • Understanding of various technical disciplines related to planning.
  • Experience in reviewing planning documents and recognizing pertinent policies.
  • Strong comprehension of technical and scientific materials.
  • Knowledge of best management practices and safety procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to coach and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
  • Effective communicator capable of facilitating discussions and resolving conflicts.
  • Proficient in standard office software and familiar with planning tools.
