As a Project Manager, you will report directly to the Senior Manager of Projects, Rolling Stock, and collaborate with a vibrant team of project managers tasked with overseeing various modernization projects for VIA Rail's rolling stock, including locomotives and passenger cars.
This role necessitates a strong presence in the railway workshop, where you will need to exhibit excellent teamwork and collaboration skills.
A hands-on approach is crucial, as you will spend considerable time in the workshop with your teams, ensuring effective operations and support.
The ideal candidate will possess a deep passion for mechanics and workshop environments.
Strong skills in project planning and coordination are essential, alongside proven leadership, problem-solving, and strategic decision-making capabilities throughout the project lifecycle.

The Project Manager will oversee a diverse array of fleet modernization projects, with budgets ranging from thousands to millions of dollars.
In this pivotal role, you will lead a multidisciplinary team that includes various collaborators from engineering, production, planning, procurement, logistics, methods, quality, and inventory management.
As the team leader, you will be responsible for mentoring and guiding your team through all project phases, ensuring strict adherence to timelines and budgets.
As an expert in project management, you will develop comprehensive project plans, closely monitor progress, and produce monthly reports to communicate project health and advancements to stakeholders and management.
Ultimately, as the accountable individual for the project, you will ensure compliance with established specifications, guaranteeing the delivery of a safe and high-quality final product that meets predefined expectations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage all aspects of project execution, including resource mobilization from internal and external firms;
- Establish and monitor project budgets, timelines, dependencies, risks, and issues;
- Define quality criteria and manage the quality assurance process;
- Ensure effective project governance through documented decisions and steering committees;
- Document and present significant decisions and change requests to the Steering Committee, validating impacts across all involved groups;
- Provide the Steering Committee with the necessary information for informed decision-making;
- Organize monthly Steering Committee meetings and prepare executive summaries;
- Maintain updated documentation and project plans, providing regular status updates;
- Facilitate the transition of responsibilities to IT Operations and/or business functions, supporting the preparation of business cases;
- Implement a robust communication and change management strategy.
Continuous Improvement:
Actively seek opportunities to optimize processes for timely and budget-compliant delivery.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Contribute to team improvements by proposing ideas and solutions for optimizing management processes;
- Identify opportunities to enhance work methodologies and project tracking systems;
- Collaborate on implementing improvements and regularly assess their effectiveness;
- Promote best practices and foster a culture of continuous improvement within the team.
Qualifications:
- University degree in engineering (preferably industrial or mechanical), administration, or a related field;
- 7 to 10 years of project management experience in rail projects or heavy equipment;
- Experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred, with a minimum of 5 years in the sector;
- Practical knowledge of project management tools and methodologies, including Microsoft SharePoint, EPM 2010, and Project Online;
- PMP certification is an asset;
- Experience in a matrix management environment;
- Bilingual in English and French (spoken and written) is essential.
