Job Summary

The City of Hamilton is seeking a highly skilled Project Manager to lead projects related to wastewater infrastructure planning and improvement. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for managing projects from initiation to completion, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery in accordance with City and Provincial policies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead projects related to wastewater infrastructure planning and improvement, focusing on identifying infrastructure improvements required to address existing system deficiencies, improve system operations, or accommodate future growth.
  • Manage consultant assignments and act as the City's primary project contact, ensuring stakeholders are informed of project progress and their interests are addressed.
  • Provide analysis on wastewater system capacity through the creation of computer spreadsheets or the use of the City's hydraulic computer model(s), requiring the ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, planning reports, and technical documents.
  • Manage projects following the City's project management and procurement policies and procedures, as well as industry standard project management principles and best practices.
  • Assume day-to-day responsibilities for specific Wastewater Systems planning and engineering projects, ensuring the needs of the public and businesses are met and exceeded, and projects are delivered in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary teams to address development, redevelopment, and environmental issues, and direct consultants on City wastewater planning and engineering projects.
  • Collect and disseminate data, review and comment on consultants' deliverables, and prepare terms of reference.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including the collection of data and reporting on the activities of the Division, performance of the Division relative to specified benchmarks, and providing information to the public and outside agencies on the operations of the Division.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Civil Engineering and/or Environmental Science, normally acquired by obtaining a degree or diploma in a related field or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • Membership with the Professional Engineers of Ontario or the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists is preferred.
  • Previous project management experience, preferably in a water/wastewater environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Ontario Water Resources Act.
  • A thorough understanding of municipal planning principles as they pertain to wastewater services.
  • Proven knowledge of the class environmental assessment process gained through extensive practical experience.
  • Effective facilitation, communication, presentation, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and/or work with a multi-disciplinary staff, in a result-oriented and predominantly unionized environment.
  • Experienced in designing and delivering customer-focused programs and services.
  • Ability to interact effectively with elected officials, representatives of other levels of government, management, peers, staff, and the general public.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of statutes, regulations, and by-laws affecting the department/section.
  • Working knowledge of computer software applications, urban drainage, and hydraulic modeling tools related to wastewater planning and engineering, such as DHI MikeUrban, InfoWorks ICM, as well as Microsoft Office, and GIS.
