Overview: The City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is dedicated to safeguarding public health and the environment through the provision of clean drinking water and effective wastewater management.

As the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the United States, DEP operates with a workforce of nearly 6,000 employees, managing the delivery of 1 billion gallons of high-quality drinking water and the treatment of 8.3 billion gallons of wastewater daily.

Role Summary: The Infrastructure Systems Engineer will play a crucial role in the architecture, implementation, maintenance, and monitoring of DEP's VMWare Server and Customer Information Billing System infrastructure.

The selected candidate will collaborate with the IT infrastructure team to:

  • Install and maintain servers and software.
  • Monitor system performance and optimize infrastructure.
  • Implement security measures and develop disaster recovery strategies.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

This position also involves:

  • Enhancing relationships with business stakeholders and aligning with IT functional units.
  • Leading technology improvements and overseeing proactive measures.
  • Taking ownership of the business stakeholders' environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Optimize network hardware and software for VMware integration.
  • Develop and deploy customized VMware solutions.
  • Administer VMware center and virtual machines.
  • Manage Microsoft Windows Server Active Directory and group policies.
  • Install operating systems, service packs, and security patches.
  • Design and implement Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
  • Maintain security standards and procedures.
  • Provide training and tools for Operations and Client Support staff.
  • Liaise with vendors for problem resolution.
  • Support business applications and conduct user acceptance testing (UAT).
  • Administer NAS/SAN server environments across multiple sites.
  • Monitor systems, log problems, and coordinate solutions.

Qualifications:

A bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution is required, along with:

  • Four years of relevant experience in IT automation engineering and infrastructure management.
  • Eight years of satisfactory experience in a similar role.

Proficiency in VMware technologies, including vSAN, VCF, NSX, and scripting is essential. Candidates should possess:

  • Five years of hands-on experience in Systems Administration, particularly with Active Directory, Exchange, Office 365, Azure, and PowerShell.
  • Strong knowledge of server hardware, software technology, and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including technical documentation.
