Position Overview

The Centre for Education in Mathematics & Computing (CEMC) at the University of Waterloo is a premier organization dedicated to enhancing engagement in mathematics and computer science education. As a pivotal unit within the Faculty of Mathematics, the CEMC serves as a vital resource for prospective students and educators alike, providing innovative outreach and educational materials.

The selected candidate will leverage their extensive experience as an exceptional educator to contribute significantly to the CEMC. This role involves leading the evaluation, design, and implementation of digital educational resources, ensuring alignment with departmental objectives and offering strategic insights to senior management. The incumbent will assess the needs of various stakeholders, including educators and students, across diverse educational systems globally, developing resources that address specific challenges and incorporate the latest technological advancements.

Key Responsibilities

Resource Development and Strategic Assessment

  • Formulate targeted strategies to enhance the utilization of CEMC's online educational initiatives.
  • Provide strategic guidance to senior management regarding electronic resources by evaluating the educational community's needs.
  • Utilize analytics tools to monitor student success and satisfaction, informing resource development.
  • Conduct evaluations of existing resources, integrating current research and technological trends to foster continuous improvement.
  • Stay informed on pedagogical research to ensure resources are relevant and effective in various educational contexts.
  • Recommend innovative uses of emerging technologies for personalized learning experiences.
  • Continuously refine strategies for CEMC's online presence to maximize impact.
  • Generate creative ideas for enhancing CEMC's offerings and platforms.

Technical Design and Execution

  • Oversee the technical implementation of e-learning resources tailored for Grades 4 to 8.
  • Lead rapid prototyping and testing of new educational resources and functionalities.
  • Adapt to rapidly evolving technologies, ensuring resources remain current and effective.
  • Maintain expertise in instructional design and learning technologies through ongoing research.
  • Interpret industry trends related to web accessibility and user experience for diverse audiences.

Content Development and Management

  • Develop and manage academic content for e-learning resources across Grades 4 to 8.
  • Ensure alignment with curriculum standards from elementary to undergraduate levels in mathematics and computer science.
  • Enhance personal subject-matter expertise and educational theory knowledge.
  • Research and propose new resources for teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Translate educational requirements for non-expert audiences.

Project Leadership

  • Manage projects related to electronic resource development, providing instructional design leadership.
  • Estimate timelines and budgets for project components, ensuring milestones are met.
  • Ensure successful completion of online resource projects, adhering to design and development best practices.
  • Utilize change management techniques to align project goals with realistic expectations.
  • Keep senior management informed of any significant project developments.

Communication and Training

  • Share knowledge of emerging educational technologies with stakeholders.
  • Present research findings and strategic directions to various audiences.
  • Facilitate information sessions with contributors and collaborators.
  • Build relationships with key representatives across campus to enhance collaborative efforts.
  • Engage with external organizations to maintain CEMC's leadership in online education.

Additional Outreach Activities

  • Participate in outreach programs, delivering engaging lessons to enhance student interest in mathematics and computer science.
  • Contribute to the design of global mathematics and computing contests.
  • Support on-campus evaluation of mathematics contests for students.
  • Engage in workshops and conferences as a speaker, providing program support.
  • Act as an ambassador for CEMC and the University of Waterloo in educational initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of recent experience teaching at the Grade 4 to 6 level.
  • Proven experience in developing educational materials and digital media.
  • Experience leading academic projects and collaborating with educational stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and e-learning best practices.
  • Familiarity with media development tools and learning management systems.
  • Advanced skills in mathematical software and MS Office suite.
  • Strong communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to travel for outreach initiatives.
  • Must pass a Vulnerable Sector Check as a condition of employment.
