Position Overview

The Centre for Education in Mathematics & Computing (CEMC) is a prominent outreach organization dedicated to enhancing engagement in mathematics and computer science. Housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, the CEMC serves as a vital resource for prospective students and their families. With a robust online presence, the CEMC has achieved significant outreach milestones, including millions of pageviews and extensive engagement through various educational initiatives.

The successful candidate will leverage their extensive classroom experience to contribute to the CEMC's mission. This role involves leading the evaluation, design, development, and implementation of electronic educational resources, aligning with departmental goals and providing strategic recommendations to senior management. The position requires assessing the needs of educators, students, and parents globally, while developing resources that incorporate emerging technologies and address specific educational challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Resource Development and Strategy

  • Formulate targeted strategies to enhance the utilization of CEMC's online outreach initiatives.
  • Advise senior management on the direction of electronic resources based on community needs.
  • Analyze predictors of student success and satisfaction using various analytics tools.
  • Evaluate existing resources and recommend improvements based on current research and technology trends.
  • Stay informed on pedagogical research to guide the creation and adaptation of resources.
  • Identify and implement emerging technologies for personalized assessment and instruction.
  • Continuously refine strategies for CEMC's online presence.
  • Generate innovative concepts for enhancing resources and platforms.

Technical Design and Implementation

  • Oversee the technical development of e-learning resources for Grades 4 to 8.
  • Lead rapid prototyping, testing, and piloting of new educational tools.
  • Adapt to rapidly evolving technologies and maintain expertise in instructional design.
  • Ensure compliance with web accessibility standards and enhance user experience.
  • Translate technical requirements for non-expert audiences.

Content Development

  • Manage the academic content for e-learning resources across various educational levels.
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of curriculum topics from elementary to undergraduate education.
  • Continuously enhance subject-matter expertise in mathematics and computer science.
  • Research and propose new resources for teaching and learning initiatives.
  • Communicate educational requirements effectively to diverse audiences.

Project Management

  • Lead electronic resource development projects, ensuring effective instructional design.
  • Provide accurate timelines and budget estimates for project components.
  • Ensure successful completion of online resource projects, adhering to design and development standards.
  • Utilize change management techniques to align project goals with realistic expectations.
  • Keep senior management informed of project developments and challenges.

Communication and Training

  • Share knowledge of new educational technologies with stakeholders.
  • Present research findings and strategic directions to internal and external audiences.
  • Facilitate information sessions and meetings with contributors.
  • Build relationships with key representatives across campus.
  • Engage with external organizations to maintain leadership in online learning.

Additional Outreach Activities

  • Participate in educational outreach programs, delivering interactive lessons to enhance student engagement.
  • Contribute to the design of global mathematics and computing contests.
  • Support on-campus evaluation of mathematics contests for students.
  • Engage in workshops and conferences, providing program support.
  • Act as an ambassador for mathematics and computer science education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or a related field.
  • 7-10 years of full-time teaching experience at the Grade 4 to 6 level.
  • Extensive background in developing educational materials and digital media.
  • Proven track record in leading academic projects and collaborating with stakeholders.
  • Experience in project management within a higher education context is an asset.
  • Knowledge of instructional design and e-learning best practices.
  • Familiarity with media development tools and learning management systems.
  • Advanced skills in mathematical software and MS Office suite.
  • Exceptional communication skills for diverse audiences.
  • Strong research abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel for outreach initiatives.
  • Clear Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) is required.
