Position Overview:

The Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Toronto is seeking a qualified individual for the role of Aquatic Research Specialist (Limited Term). This position is designed for a two-year engagement, focusing on a collaborative project with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry.

Project Description:

This initiative aims to leverage a comprehensive dataset encompassing fish populations, environmental variables, and lower trophic levels collected from various sites over an extended period. The primary objective is to analyze and interpret the factors influencing fish species diversity and its fluctuations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate hypotheses grounded in relevant literature and professional insights to investigate using extensive spatial and temporal datasets.
  • Conduct analyses on large datasets to identify spatial patterns and correlations among fish populations, environmental conditions, and lower food-web data.
  • Engage in collaboration with governmental scientists and biologists.
  • Possibly organize a workshop involving selected participants from both government and academic sectors related to the research.
  • Present findings to partner organizations and at scientific conferences.
  • Draft manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Travel may be necessary for meetings with collaborators or to present research outcomes at conferences.

Qualifications:

Education: A PhD in aquatic ecology, fisheries science, ecological statistics, or a closely related field.

Experience: A minimum of three to five years of practical experience in research involving statistical analysis of large datasets, with a proven record of publications and conference presentations.

Skills:

  • Proficient in advanced statistical methodologies, including spatial statistics, multivariate analysis, and time series analysis.
  • Familiarity with aquatic ecosystems is essential.
  • Knowledge of fisheries and Great Lakes ecosystems is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • High proficiency in R and its associated packages, as well as ArcGIS; familiarity with MATLAB is an advantage.
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy.
  • Self-driven with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Eager to learn new techniques and stay updated in the field.
  • Ability to lead projects and coordinate research teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
