Toronto, Ontario, Canada University of Toronto Full time

Position Overview:

The University of Toronto's Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology is seeking a qualified Aquatic Research Specialist for a limited-term appointment. This role is integral to a collaborative project with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry, focusing on the analysis of extensive datasets related to fish populations and environmental conditions.

Project Description:

This initiative aims to leverage a comprehensive dataset collected over two decades, which encompasses various fish species, environmental parameters, and lower trophic levels in a significant aquatic ecosystem. The primary focus will be on understanding the dynamics affecting fish species composition, particularly for key species that are vital to local fisheries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate hypotheses grounded in relevant literature and professional insights to investigate using extensive spatial and temporal datasets.
  • Analyze large datasets to identify spatial patterns and correlations among fish populations, environmental factors, and lower food-web components.
  • Engage in collaboration with governmental scientists and biologists to enhance research outcomes.
  • Possibly organize a workshop involving selected participants from both government and academic sectors to discuss research findings.
  • Present research outcomes to partner organizations and at scientific conferences.
  • Draft manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Travel may be required for collaboration and to present research findings at various conferences.

Qualifications:

Education: A PhD in aquatic ecology, fisheries science, ecological statistics, or a closely related field is required.

Experience: A minimum of three to five years of demonstrated experience in research and statistical analysis of large datasets, with a proven record of publications and conference presentations.

Skills:

  • Proficient in advanced statistical methodologies, including spatial statistics and multivariate analysis.
  • Familiarity with aquatic ecosystems is essential.
  • Knowledge of fisheries and Great Lakes ecosystems is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • High proficiency in R and its associated packages, as well as ArcGIS; familiarity with MATLAB is an asset.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong emphasis on accuracy.
  • Self-driven with the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Capable of working independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and stay updated in the field.
  • Ability to lead projects and coordinate research teams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Application Details:

This position is categorized under Research Administration & Teaching, with a full-time schedule. The compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
