Toronto, Ontario, Canada University Of Toronto Full time $200

Department:
Faculty of Arts & Science

Location:
St. George (Downtown Toronto)

The Acceleration Consortium (AC) at the University of Toronto is at the forefront of a revolutionary change in scientific exploration, aimed at expediting technology advancement and commercialization.

The AC represents a worldwide network of academia, industry, and government, harnessing the capabilities of artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, materials science, and high-throughput chemistry to establish self-driving laboratories (SDLs), also known as materials acceleration platforms (MAPs).

These autonomous laboratories swiftly create the materials and molecules essential for a sustainable, healthy, and resilient future, with applications that span renewable energy, consumer electronics, and pharmaceuticals.

Staff Scientists within the AC will push the boundaries of AI-driven autonomous discovery and innovate the materials and molecules necessary to tackle some of society's most pressing challenges, including climate change, water contamination, and potential pandemics.

The Acceleration Consortium has been awarded a significant Canadian First Research Excellence Grant of $200M over seven years to develop self-driving labs for chemistry and materials, marking the largest grant ever received by a Canadian university.

Inorganic solid-state materials,
Drug discovery utilizing chemical probes,
Polymers for applications in materials science and biology,

We are seeking staff scientists to design the hardware and software requirements for these SDLs and to conduct research initiatives leveraging these laboratories for materials and molecule discovery.

The Staff Scientists engaged with the AC are highly proficient and seasoned researchers who will operate autonomously to develop the AI and automation technologies necessary for constructing robust and scalable self-driving labs, managing these SDLs, and formulating and executing research programs (in alignment with the AC's scientific leadership team) that utilize the SDL platforms for discovering materials and molecules.

This position will report to the Academic Director and Executive Director of the Acceleration Consortium.

We are interested in candidates with diverse backgrounds and expertise to contribute to the development of Self-Driving Labs and materials discovery.
