Biology Laboratory Student Assistant

The Biology Laboratory Student Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the laboratory team with various tasks including the organization, preparation, and upkeep of the lab environment.
This position may involve responsibilities such as caring for laboratory animals, maintaining plant life in the Greenhouses, and assisting in microbiology lab activities.
Key Responsibilities:- Assist in the setup and cleanup of laboratory sessions.
- Animal care duties: feeding, cleaning, and overall maintenance.
- Greenhouse responsibilities: watering, pruning, and managing pests.
- Prepare chemical solutions and materials for weekly laboratory sessions under supervision.
- Assemble weekly kits for laboratory use.
- Educate fellow students on proper animal care techniques.
- After receiving training, engage in microbiology lab tasks including media preparation, equipment sterilization, and working with bacterial cultures under guidance.
- Preference will be given to students who have completed their first or second year in Biology.
Eligibility Criteria for Domestic Students:
To qualify for the position of Student Assistant/Student Research Assistant, domestic students must meet one of the following:
- Enrolled in at least one (3 credit) course at Douglas College during the work term.
- Have been enrolled in at least one (3 credit) course at Douglas College in the term prior to the work term and intend to enroll in the following term.
- Enrolled in at least two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. during the work term.
- Have been enrolled in at least two (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. in the term prior to the work term and intend to enroll in the following term.
Eligibility Criteria for International Students:
International students must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible for the position:
- Enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
- International students from other accredited public post-secondary institutions in B.C. must possess a valid Study Permit that allows for employment, along with proof of full-time enrollment.
All candidates must provide an original copy of their Social Insurance Number (SIN) and Study Permit prior to commencing work.
Preference will be given to qualified Douglas College students who meet the outlined criteria.
