About the Role

As a Student Assistant in the Biology Lab at Douglas College, you will play a vital role in supporting the lab staff in maintaining a clean and organized workspace. This position requires a team player who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and is willing to learn and take on new responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with lab setup and cleanup, ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Provide animal care and husbandry, including feeding, cleaning, and general care of lab animals.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of the Green Houses, including watering, pruning, and pest management.
  • Prepare solutions and chemicals for weekly labs under the supervision of lab staff.
  • Build weekly kits for labs and assist with teaching fellow students about animal care.
  • Work in microbiology labs, preparing media, sterilizing equipment, and working with bacteria under supervision.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to have completed first and/or second-year Biology courses. Additionally, domestic students must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College throughout the work term.
  • Have been enrolled in and maintained a minimum of one or more (3 credit) courses at Douglas College in the term immediately preceding the work term and have indicated an intention to enroll at the college in the term immediately following the work term.
  • Be enrolled in and maintain a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. throughout the work term.
  • Have been enrolled in and maintained a minimum of two or more (3 credit) courses at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. in the term immediately preceding the work term and have indicated an intention to enroll at the institution in the term immediately following the work term.

International students must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in full-time studies at Douglas College throughout the academic year.
  • Be an international student at another accredited public post-secondary institution in B.C. with a valid Study Permit that has the notation – "May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186 (F), (V) or (W). Must cease working if no longer meeting these criteria." Proof of enrollment in full-time studies from the other post-secondary institution is required.
