POSITION SUMMARY

The Healthcare Support Specialist plays a vital role in delivering both direct and indirect patient care services, contributing to the implementation of the Interprofessional care strategy. Responsibilities are assigned and guided by the Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), or other qualified members of the multidisciplinary team.

This role requires a diverse skill set related to general medical-surgical care. The Healthcare Support Specialist must possess strong critical thinking abilities and be adaptable to varying circumstances. To meet the diverse needs of the organization, the specialist should be open to cross-training in specialized areas as necessary. This position may involve working in various clinical environments throughout Michael Garron Hospital, including off-site locations as needed.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

A certificate or diploma in personal support work from an accredited institution is required.
- Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support is mandatory.
- Proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the English language is essential.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

- A minimum of 1 to 2 years of recent relevant experience is preferred.
- Flexibility to work across all Health Services within the organization, including off-site clinical environments.
- Familiarity with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other pertinent regulations.
- Understanding of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System.
- Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies, procedures, protocols, and practices.
- Awareness of Emergency Codes and their applications.
- The role involves moderate physical demands, including lifting, extensive walking, standing, bending, and maneuvering equipment.
- Proven knowledge of infection control practices.
- A positive attitude and the ability to collaborate effectively within a team setting.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional growth.
- Capacity to build caring and trusting relationships with patients and their families to support patient-centered care.
- Ability to maintain consistent productivity and efficiency levels.
- Competence in performing duties with courtesy and respect.
- Adherence to confidentiality standards as per organizational privacy policies.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Patient service-oriented mindset, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- A good attendance record is essential.
- All staff members are expected to comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act of Ontario and contribute to a culture of safety for both patients and staff by following established safety policies and procedures.
