About This Role

The Mental Health and Addiction Program (MHAP) is looking for a full-time physician to join a collaborative inter-professional clinical team. This role involves providing evidence-based withdrawal management and associated mental health and addiction services in an outpatient setting.

The physician will be expected to work a total of 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday, during the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. There may be opportunities for virtual care, which can be discussed further. This position may be shared among multiple physicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluate and manage substance use disorders.
  • Collaborate with the clinical team to initiate and oversee withdrawal management protocols.
  • Assess and address other medical and psychiatric conditions as necessary.
  • Conduct risk assessments and interventions for suicidal ideation or self-harm.
  • Develop and implement care and discharge plans in partnership with clients, the clinical team, and families.
  • Facilitate transitions of care across various settings.
  • Provide trauma-informed and culturally competent care.
  • Deliver brief interventions related to substance use and concurrent disorders.
  • Maintain accurate and timely health records in compliance with documentation policies.
Expected Work Hours

The physician will work a total of 37.5 hours per week, with scheduled hours from Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm.

Qualifications
  • Current medical license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS).
  • Certification in addiction medicine from recognized professional organizations is preferred.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain active credentials and privileges with NSHA.
  • Must maintain liability insurance through the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
Clinical Experience
  • Experience in addiction medicine is advantageous but not mandatory.
  • Experience in a medical withdrawal management service is a plus; training and mentoring opportunities are available for those with limited experience.
