Role Overview
The Vice President of Merchandising Operations plays a crucial role in steering the SportChek business unit's Merchandising Planning, Allocation & Business Support teams (including Pricing, Capabilities & Training, Merchandise Data Analytics, Merchandise Data Governance, and Merchandise Transformation). Reporting directly to the Chief Merchant of SportChek, this individual is a vital member of our merchandising leadership team. They will collaborate closely with leaders across the organization and will significantly influence the growth strategies, financial plans, and operational objectives of the SportChek and Atmosphere retail brands.
At Canadian Tire, we embrace a flexible work model, known as 'Hybrid', allowing individuals to work both at a CTC campus and/or remotely to achieve desired outcomes. Managers will determine work location based on business and team requirements, always prioritizing individual well-being and personal needs. Our aim is to empower teams and individuals to make the best decisions for themselves, recognizing that this will vary for each person.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee sales, margin, and inventory planning, inventory management and allocation, in-season forecasting, merchandise analytics & reporting, pricing execution, and product & price data governance.
- Collaborate with Merchants, Finance, Supply Chain, Store Operations, FP&A, and Marketing to achieve financial objectives while effectively managing performance.
- Lead the overall strategic and capability development roadmap for Merchandise Operations, ensuring effective, scalable, and resilient processes and tools across merchandising functions.
- Manage Sales & Margin planning and forecasting processes, developing in-season, annual, and five-year projections by category and channel.
- Direct inventory planning, replenishment, and allocation processes. Identify opportunities to enhance inventory productivity, improve service levels, and effectively manage open-to-buy dollars against in-season purchases.
- Influence business strategy and in-season management by transforming data into actionable insights, utilizing business and financial analysis skills to enhance performance and KPIs.
- Drive continuous improvement of reporting solutions that support the merchandising and merchandise operations teams.
- Own overall planning KPIs, including inventory budgets, receipt timing, inventory turnover, in-stock metrics, aged inventory, POS Sales, and margin. Collaborate with Finance to provide key inputs into annual budgeting processes and in-season forecasts.
- Lead and develop a high-performing Merchandise Operations team, focusing on individual and team growth, career development, and coaching.
- 10+ years of extensive experience in merchandising, retail planning, and inventory management, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
- Strategic thinker with strong business insight; capable of assessing and mobilizing resources to achieve objectives.
- Robust analytical skills with a comprehensive understanding of retail metrics and drivers to address financial cause and effect.
- Proven people management and leadership abilities, with a track record of developing, managing, and motivating a high-performing team around a compelling vision.
- Demonstrated capability to prepare and present recommendations to Senior Leaders, clearly articulating trade-offs.
- Effective relationship-building and collaboration skills across various groups, with the ability to influence stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Acts as a change agent, with a proven history of driving results and business transformation.
- Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
