The Vice President of Merchandising Operations plays a crucial role in leading the SportChek business unit's Merchandising Planning, Allocation & Business Support teams (including Pricing, Capabilities & Training, Merch Data Analytics, Merch Data Governance, and Merch Transformation). Reporting directly to the Chief Merchant of SportChek, this individual is a vital member of our merchandising leadership team. They will collaborate closely with leaders across the organization and will significantly influence the growth strategies, financial objectives, and operational plans for the SportChek and Atmosphere retail brands.

Key Responsibilities

The Vice President of Merchandising Operations is responsible for:

  • Overseeing sales, margin, and inventory planning, as well as inventory management and allocation, in-season forecasting, merchandise analytics & reporting, pricing execution, and product & price data governance.
  • Collaborating with Merchants, Finance, Supply Chain, Store Operations, FP&A, and Marketing to deliver financial plans while effectively managing performance against those plans.
  • Leading the strategic development roadmap for Merchandise Operations, ensuring effective, scalable, and resilient processes and tools across merchandising functions while contributing to and driving banner strategies and KPIs.
  • Managing Sales & Margin planning and forecasting processes, developing in-season, annual, and five-year outlooks by category and channel.
  • Overseeing inventory planning, replenishment, and allocation processes, identifying opportunities to enhance inventory productivity and improve service levels.
  • Utilizing data insights to influence business strategy and in-season management, leveraging analytical skills to enhance business performance and KPIs.
  • Leading the continuous improvement of reporting solutions that serve the merchandising and merchandise operations teams.
  • Managing overall planning KPIs, including inventory budgets, receipt timing, inventory turnover, in-stock metrics, aged inventory, POS sales, and margin.
  • Leading and developing a high-performing Merchandise Operations team, focusing on individual and team development, career progression, and coaching.

Qualifications

  • Over 10 years of extensive experience in merchandising, retail planning, and inventory management, with at least 5 years in a leadership capacity.
  • A strategic thinker with strong business acumen, capable of assessing and mobilizing resources to achieve objectives.
  • Proficient analytical skills with a solid grasp of retail metrics and drivers to address financial implications.
  • Strong leadership and people management skills, with a proven ability to develop, manage, and inspire a large, high-performing team around a compelling vision.
  • Demonstrated capability to prepare and communicate recommendations to senior leadership, articulating trade-offs effectively.
  • Excellent relationship-building and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence across various groups.
  • A proactive problem solver who acts as a change agent, with a strong track record of driving results and business transformation.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity.
