Are you a dedicated safety advocate with expertise in managing hazardous substances and ensuring regulatory adherence? We invite you to consider the role of Hazardous Materials Safety Coordinator.Reporting to the Health & Safety Manager, the Hazardous Materials Safety Coordinator plays a crucial role in assisting various academic and operational units in the secure handling of hazardous materials. This position is essential for maintaining compliance with the mandated Workplace Hazardous Material Information System and the National Fire Code of Canada. The Coordinator provides guidance, recommendations, and ensures that all legislative and regulatory standards are upheld concerning hazardous materials, inventory management, and the safe storage and transportation of chemicals across the institution. Additionally, this role involves delivering educational programs and training sessions to the university community regarding hazardous materials and safety protocols, as well as implementing health and safety initiatives that foster a secure and healthy environment for work and learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with essential stakeholders to ensure that updated Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are acquired and disseminated to all relevant areas as necessary;
- Design and distribute workplace labels for any repackaged or newly created hazardous materials;
- Oversee, reconcile, and maintain hazardous material inventories throughout the campus using the university's chemical inventory management system;
- Provide evaluations and recommendations for chemical acquisitions made by laboratory staff;
- Develop and enforce inspection policies and procedures, maintaining a schedule for routine inspections focused on chemical storage, quantity, compatibility, and regulatory compliance;
- Educate stakeholders on appropriate chemical storage practices, identify compatibility concerns, and other hazards associated with hazardous materials storage;
- Prepare reports on identified deficiencies and offer consultation on necessary remediation actions;
- Gather and analyze data related to chemical storage practices, processes, and policies, as well as hazardous material inventory management;
- Create and manage a reporting system to keep relevant safety services informed about the status of each area's fire load;
- Advise stakeholders on best practices for chemical inventory management and collaborate with them to develop tailored chemical management plans;

- In-depth knowledge of chemical safety protocols.
- Understanding of WHMIS and the National Fire Code of Canada.
- Current certification in WHMIS 2015 and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods is advantageous.
- Experience in a post-secondary research environment is beneficial.
- Strong planning, organizational, analytical, and administrative skills.
