POSITION OVERVIEW: The Recreation Therapist plays a pivotal role within Park Place Seniors Living, overseeing the creation, execution, and assessment of programs tailored to address the diverse physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive needs of residents. This position encompasses departmental management and program development, with a strong emphasis on resident safety and adherence to the organization's commitment to a "culture of safety".

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Department Management:
    • Assumes leadership of the Recreation Therapy department.
    • Facilitates and engages in monthly departmental meetings.
    • Contributes to various site committees as designated.
    • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to identify and address the needs of residents, staff, and volunteers.
  2. Program Development:
    • Oversees the training, supervision, and assessment of Recreation Aides.
    • Maintains accurate records regarding resident progress.
    • Ensures continuous communication with team members.
    • Conducts quality assurance audits and evaluations, including summaries and action plans to assess the effectiveness of current programs.
    • Guarantees resident participation in recreational activities aligned with their individual treatment plans.
    • Leads and inspires residents in both individual and group leisure activities.
    • Ensures resident safety during off-site programs by providing appropriate supervision.
    • Participates in educational workshops.
    • Performs additional related duties as necessary.
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Fosters positive relationships with the community through the development and participation in community-based programs, maintaining regular contact with local agencies.
    • Represents Park Place Seniors Living in various committees and professional associations as required.
  4. Documentation and Compliance:
    • Coordinates MDS data entry by observing and communicating with residents, direct care staff, interdisciplinary teams, and families.
    • Manages Minimum Data Set (MDS) and Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs) related to recreation, including care plans and progress notes.
    • Records comprehensive, accurate, and relevant data for each resident in accordance with Park Place charting standards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY OBLIGATIONS:

  1. Understands and adheres to Park Place's Occupational Health & Safety policies and safe work practices.
  2. Employs safe work procedures in compliance with established rules and regulations.
  3. Takes all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of residents, visitors, self, and colleagues.
  4. Reports incidents, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions to the supervisor promptly.
  5. Suggests improvements for safety practices.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Degree or Diploma in an accredited Recreation Therapy program.
  2. Valid First Aid/CPR certification with a minimum of two years of relevant experience preferred.
  3. Class 4 Driver's License is preferred.
  4. Experience in coordinating recreation programs is advantageous.
  5. Familiarity with the characteristics of long-term care residents is essential.
  6. Experience working with volunteers and in program organization and public relations is preferred; equivalencies may be considered.

  1. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with a strong ability to engage with the evolving needs of long-term care residents.
  2. Organized, reliable, and adaptable.
  3. Capable of making informed decisions and being accountable for those choices.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills with residents, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  5. Ability to operate the Home's Handi-bus, if applicable.
  6. Proven capacity to prioritize and manage workload effectively.
  7. Team-building abilities.
  8. Skilled in resolving conflicts and addressing issues.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Recreation Therapist role involves considerable walking, sitting, and standing throughout the shift, along with frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Occasional heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of substantial objects, as well as moving furniture, may be required.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

  1. Physical: Potential strain on shoulders, neck, and back; risk of eye strain/injury; electrical hazards.
  2. Environmental: Exposure to drafts, dust, and situations requiring solitary work; operation of equipment with moving parts.
  3. Chemical: Contact with cleaning agents and disinfectants.
  4. Biological: Risk of exposure to communicable diseases such as colds and influenza.
  5. Radiation: Minimal high-risk elements related to ergonomics and psychological factors in resident exercise programs and interactions.
