POSITION OVERVIEW: The Recreation Therapist plays a pivotal role within Park Place Home, tasked with the design, execution, and evaluation of programs tailored to fulfill the diverse physical, social, emotional, spiritual, and cognitive needs of residents. This position encompasses departmental management and program development, ensuring a steadfast commitment to resident safety and adherence to the established "culture of safety" in alignment with the Strategic Directions of Park Place Seniors Living.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Department Management:
    • Oversees the Recreation Therapy department's operations.
    • Facilitates and participates in monthly departmental meetings.
    • Engages in various site committees as designated.
    • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to identify and address the needs of residents, staff, and volunteers.
  2. Program Development:
    • Responsible for the training, oversight, and assessment of Recreation Aides.
    • Documents relevant information regarding resident progress.
    • Maintains continuous communication with team members.
    • Conducts audits and evaluations as part of the Park Place Quality Assurance program, including summarizing findings and developing action plans to assess program effectiveness.
    • Ensures all residents participate in designated recreational activities aligned with their treatment plans.
    • Leads and encourages residents in both individual and group leisure activities.
    • Guarantees that off-site programs are conducted safely with appropriate supervision.
    • Participates in educational sessions.
    • Performs additional related duties as necessary.
  3. Community Engagement:
    • Fosters positive community relations through the development and participation in community-based programs, maintaining regular contact with local agencies.
    • Represents Park Place Home in various committees and professional associations as required.
  4. Record Keeping:
    • Coordinates and engages in MDS data entry by observing residents and communicating with direct care staff, interdisciplinary teams, and families.
    • Manages the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and Resident Assessment Protocols (RAPs) related to recreation, including care plans and progress notes.
    • Records comprehensive, accurate, and relevant data for each resident in accordance with Park Place charting standards.

HEALTH AND SAFETY DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for understanding and adhering to Park Place's Occupational Health & Safety policies and safe work practices.
  2. Utilizes safe work procedures and complies with relevant regulations.
  3. Takes all reasonable precautions to ensure the safety of residents, visitors, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  4. Reports any near misses, injuries, equipment damage, or accidents to the supervisor immediately and completes necessary documentation.
  5. Identifies and reports unsafe work conditions and behaviors, offering safety suggestions as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Degree or Diploma from an accredited institution in Recreation Therapy.
  2. Current First Aid/CPR certification with a minimum of two years of relevant experience preferred.
  3. Class 4 Driver's License is preferred.
  4. Prior experience in coordinating recreation programs is advantageous.
  5. Understanding of the characteristics of long-term care residents is essential.
  6. Experience working with volunteers and in program organization and public relations is preferred; equivalencies may be considered.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  1. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in English, with a strong capacity to understand and respond to the evolving needs of long-term care residents.
  2. Highly organized, reliable, and adaptable.
  3. Ability to make informed decisions and take responsibility for those decisions.
  4. Strong interpersonal skills with residents, families, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  5. Capability to operate the Home's Handi-bus, if applicable.
  6. Proven ability to prioritize and manage workload effectively.
  7. Team-building abilities.
  8. Skill in facilitating the resolution of conflicts and problems.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Recreation Therapist role necessitates considerable walking, sitting, and standing throughout the shift, along with frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, and reaching. The position may involve occasional heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of substantial objects, as well as moving furniture.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS:

  1. Physical: Risks include strain on shoulders, neck, and back, as well as potential eye strain or injury.
  2. Environmental: Exposure to drafts, dust, and situations involving working alone, as well as using equipment with moving parts.
  3. Chemical: Exposure to cleaning agents and disinfectants.
  4. Biological: Risk of exposure to communicable diseases such as colds and influenza.
  5. Radiation: Minimal high-risk elements related to ergonomics and psychological factors associated with resident exercise programs and interactions.
