Work at Radio Canada International

At Radio Canada International, we are dedicated to creating content that informs, entertains, and connects Canadians across various platforms. Our achievements are rooted in our core values, which include creativity, integrity, inclusiveness, and relevance.

The Opportunity

Radio Canada International is seeking a Lead Producer to oversee our Saturday afternoon call-in program, Just Asking, which is set to expand its duration. This role is based in Toronto.

Hosted by Saroja Coelho, Just Asking provides Canadians with live access to experts who address their inquiries regarding current events and pressing issues, particularly focusing on the interests of individuals aged 30-49.

Please note: This is a 15-month contract to cover a leave.

Your Role

As the Lead Producer of Just Asking, you will guide the team in crafting a show that airs live weekly on Saturday afternoons nationwide, and is also available as an on-demand podcast. Reporting to the Managing Editor, your responsibilities include developing, motivating, and inspiring the team, while leading the assignment and production of engaging programming that encourages listener participation.

You are a compassionate leader passionate about enhancing awareness and advancing the evolution of this relatively new program.

Your focus will be on audience needs, shaping the editorial agenda to ensure that topics, experts, and other elements cater to our listeners' desire to understand the news and its implications, enabling them to make informed decisions. You will prioritize content that resonates with Canadians aged 30-49 while ensuring the programming remains relevant and engaging for all demographics.

Employing a multiplatform strategy for content planning, you will produce podcasts of the programs that promote engagement post-live call-in, as well as web articles that summarize or elaborate on insights from the show, ensuring Just Asking content is accessible whenever and wherever desired.

You will foster an inclusive and respectful workplace culture, recognizing the significance of representation in public broadcasting, ensuring Just Asking reflects the diversity of our audiences in the selection of topics, guests, and callers featured on air. Additionally, you will promote a variety of perspectives within the team.

As an exceptional communicator, you will effectively direct and mentor staff, resolve conflicts as they arise, and implement comprehensive training and development plans for team members.

Your strong writing abilities and high level of creative thinking will be evident in program and production planning and problem-solving efforts.

Flexibility and adaptability are key, as you will be eager to adjust programming and strategies based on key metrics, listener feedback, and industry trends.

As an ethical leader, you will fully understand and uphold the principles of Radio Canada International's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading weekly story meetings
  • Approving and assigning topics and story treatments
  • Writing show introductions and promotional materials, and reviewing scripts
  • Producing weekly call-outs/promotions for network and syndication
  • Creating audio-rich montages for each segment
  • Mentoring and developing the host and other team members
  • Managing schedules and administrative tasks (timecards, leaves, etc.)
  • Collaborating with other departments for content creation and promotion

We are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • Strong journalistic skills and impeccable news judgment
  • Deep interest in and understanding of content appealing to 30-49 age group
  • Excellence in writing, editing, and integrating sound into programming
  • Superior leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, with a proven ability to motivate teams with empathy
  • Ability to assign and manage staff, coordinate and collaborate with other departments effectively, and mediate disputes
  • Capability to pivot quickly in response to breaking news and handle issues confidently during live broadcasts
  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical considerations in journalism
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong team player
  • University degree or equivalent, preferably in journalism or a related media field
  • Minimum of five years of experience, with at least three years in broadcasting or a closely related industry.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge assessments.

We appreciate all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.

Radio Canada International is committed to being a leader in reflecting our country's diversity. We believe that to create and share stories that connect Canadians, we must have a workforce that mirrors the ever-evolving makeup of our nation. Therefore, we value equal opportunity and strive to nurture an inclusive workplace where individual differences are recognized and valued, extending to all services we provide as Canada's public broadcaster.
