The Opportunity
CBC Radio is looking for a Senior Producer to lead our Saturday afternoon call-in show, Just Asking , which is expanding to two hours this September. The job is based in Toronto.
Hosted by Saroja Coelho, Just Asking gives Canadians live access to experts who can answer their questions on news events and other issues that are top of mind, with a particular focus on 30-49 year olds.
Please note: This is a 15-month contract to cover a leave.
Your role
As the Senior Producer of Just Asking , you lead the team in shaping the show that is live weekly on Saturday afternoons across the country, and available everywhere as an on-demand podcast. Reporting to the Managing Editor, you work to develop, motivate, and inspire the team, leading the assignment and production of programming that encourages listeners to participate.
You are a strong, empathetic leader who is excited about building awareness and continuing the evolution of this months-old program.
You prioritize audience needs in setting the editorial agenda, ensuring the topics, the experts, and other elements serve the needs of our listeners who want to better understand the news and how it affects them so they can make good decisions. You focus on what interests Canadians 30-49, while ensuring the programming remains relevant and engaging for all demographics.
You take a multiplatform approach to content planning, producing podcasts of the programs that encourage uptake after the live call-in, and web articles that collate or expand on learnings from the show so that Just Asking content is accessible and available when and where people want it.
You promote an inclusive and respectful work culture, and have a deep appreciation of the importance of representation in public broadcasting, ensuring Just Asking reflects the diversity of our audiences in the choice of topics, guests, and callers put on air. You also ensure a diversity of perspectives on the team.
You are an excellent communicator with a proven ability to direct and mentor staff, resolving conflicts when they arise, and producing and implementing robust training and development plans for team members.
You possess strong writing skills, and a high level of creative thinking which you demonstrate in program and production planning and problem solving.
You are flexible and adaptable, eager to make programming and strategy changes based on key metric data, listener feedback, and industry trends.
You are an ethical leader, with a full understanding of, and comfort with upholding, the principles of the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Key Tasks
Leading weekly story meetings
Approving and assigning topics, story treatments
Writing show intros and bills, and vetting scripts
Producing weekly call outs/promos for network and syndication
Creating audio-rich montages for each segment
Mentoring and developing host and other team members
Managing schedules and other administrative tasks (timecards, leaves, etc.)
Liaising with Cross Country Checkup, digital, podcasting, communications, and other departments for content creation, collaboration, and promotion
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- Strong journalistic skills, with impeccable news judgment
- Keen interest in and understanding of content that appeals to 30-49
- Excellence in writing, editing, and incorporating sound into programming
- Superior leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, with the demonstrated ability to motivate teams successfully, with empathy
- Ability to assign and manage staff, coordinate and collaborate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
- Ability to pivot quickly if breaking news mandates a topic change, and to act swiftly with confidence if a JSP issue or other problem arises during the live show
- High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong and supportive team player
- University degree or equivalent, preferably in journalism or other media-related field
- Minimum (5) years' experience of which at least three must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry.
