Position Overview: The University of Toronto is seeking applications for the role of Writing Instructor. This position involves assisting students with writing tasks across various academic disciplines. Instructors may also be required to conduct group sessions focused on enhancing general writing abilities or integrating writing skills throughout the curriculum.
Available Positions: 3-5
Work Hours:
Contracts are flexible based on the instructor's experience, availability, and the needs of the department, typically ranging from 50 to approximately 200 hours, with the possibility of additional hours as demand increases.
Scheduling: Hours will be arranged through mutual agreement, tailored to the requirements of the department.
*In light of current circumstances, instruction will be delivered in both in-person and online formats, subject to change as determined by the Faculty or the University.
Appointment Duration: The position spans an academic session.
Compensation:
Writing Instructor 1: $53.41 per hour, plus vacation pay
Writing Instructor 1 Long Term: $56.07 per hour, plus vacation pay
Writing Instructor 2: $57.42 per hour, plus vacation pay
Writing Instructor 2 Long Term: $58.58 per hour, plus vacation pay
Writing Instructor 2 (Priority): $59.11 per hour, plus vacation pay
Writing Instructor 2 (Priority) Long Term: $60.29 per hour, plus vacation pay
Note: In the event of discrepancies between the rates in this posting and those in the collective agreement, the collective agreement rates will take precedence.
Minimum Qualifications:
A Master's degree along with relevant experience in one-on-one writing instruction and/or teaching university courses that emphasize writing instruction; possessing both types of experience is highly advantageous.
Preferred Qualifications:
A PhD, familiarity with the University of Toronto's specific programs and student demographics, and training in writing instruction across various disciplines as well as second-language instruction at the university level.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of Writing Instructors is to provide individualized tutoring for university-level writing across all disciplines, focusing on aspects such as topic response, source utilization, organization, argumentation, style, and language proficiency. Instructors may also assist students with study skills, including time management, note-taking, and exam preparation. Contracts will encompass tutoring responsibilities and may also include opportunities for conducting workshops or webinars on writing and study skills.
