Entuitive is on the lookout for a dynamic and driven Senior Structural Engineer to engage in a variety of small to medium-scale projects. This role is crucial in upholding the exceptional service standards of our structural engineering division. The selected candidate will play a key role in expanding our Special Projects team in Ottawa, collaborating closely with the business development unit and other specialized teams within Entuitive.

Understanding Special Projects

The Special Projects division at Entuitive is dedicated to tackling small to medium projects that present diverse challenges, necessitating a broad skill set in structural engineering. This work often entails modifications to existing structures or collaborating with design teams to deliver tailored structural solutions. Our projects encompass all types of structural materials and building forms, frequently requiring expertise in older structural systems or working with incomplete data regarding existing frameworks. The team manages projects from initial client discussions through to design and on-site construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute special projects tasks, including:
    • Participating in client meetings from project inception to completion
    • Formulating internal project budgets and preparing fee proposals
    • Evaluating existing structures to ascertain construction details
    • Conducting assessments for modifications, upgrades, or restorations of existing structures
    • Collaborating with architects and consultants to create comprehensive structural designs
    • Working with Entuitive technologists to produce drawings for permits, tenders, and construction
    • Monitoring ongoing construction work for adherence to design documents
    • Attending construction meetings to provide insights and updates
    • Documenting observations, assessments, and significant findings in reports
    • Coordinating and reviewing submissions and shop drawings during the construction phase
  • Drive growth in special projects by:
    • Attracting new clients through strategic business development efforts
    • Engaging in networking opportunities and client meetings
    • Collaborating with Entuitive's business development, marketing, and proposal teams to respond to client requests
  • Oversee the financial performance of projects, ensuring budget compliance and monitoring costs
  • Mentor junior engineers in both technical and practical aspects of structural design and project execution
  • Perform additional duties as required

Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience

  • A degree in civil engineering with a specialization in structural engineering
  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant industry experience
  • Possession of a P.Eng. designation is mandatory
  • Experience in business development and proposal writing
  • Proficiency in structural design and/or construction engineering for buildings
  • Experience with existing facilities is advantageous
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of engaging with stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Familiarity with construction materials and methods, particularly concrete, steel, wood, and masonry
  • Proficient in using software such as SAP, SAFE, Woodworks, Bluebeam, and Hilti Profis
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with a desire to develop a team
  • A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle
  • Knowledge of embodied carbon concepts is a plus
