Meridia Recruitment Solutions is in search of a Head of Financial Reporting and Taxation to oversee financial operations.

In this pivotal role, you will be tasked with managing the preparation, analysis, and dissemination of financial statements for a diverse group of companies. A profound understanding of financial accounting standards is essential. The ideal candidate will guarantee the accuracy, integrity, and promptness of financial data, while delivering crucial insights to facilitate strategic decision-making and resolve issues effectively.

The Head of Financial Reporting and Taxation will also supervise the tax operations for the group, encompassing compliance, structuring, and planning initiatives. You will collaborate with advisors and management to ensure tax efficiency across the organization and play a key role in coordinating with auditors in both Canada and the USA.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Direct the preparation and evaluation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in alignment with GAAP.
  • Oversee the consolidation of financial outcomes from various subsidiaries and business units.
  • Lead the preparation and assessment of compliance reports for financial institutions.
  • Establish and maintain robust internal controls over financial reporting processes.
  • Collaborate with internal and external auditors to facilitate audits and address any findings.
  • Formulate and implement tax planning strategies to minimize after-tax expenses in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Manage the Canadian corporate income tax compliance function across the organization.
  • Collaborate with external advisors for the preparation and submission of US tax returns.
  • Address inquiries and issues arising from business units regarding commodity taxes.
  • Provide comprehensive financial analysis and interpretations to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Identify trends, variances, and key performance indicators to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Assist in the formulation of forecasts, budgets, and long-term financial strategies.
  • Evaluate the performance of investment portfolio managers.
  • Assess investment opportunities, including publicly traded companies and private enterprises.
  • Conduct due diligence on potential investment opportunities.
  • Continuously assess and enhance financial reporting processes and systems.
  • Implement best practices and automation to improve efficiency and accuracy.
  • Collaborate with IT and other departments to optimize financial systems and tools.
  • Mentor and develop the finance team in partnership with the Corporate Controller.
  • Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and support career development initiatives.

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • An accounting designation (CPA or equivalent) with over 7 years of post-designation experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP.
  • More than 3 years of Canadian tax experience, along with familiarity with US tax procedures and returns.
  • Strong accounting, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational abilities with the capacity to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • A collaborative approach to working independently and with various business lines and tax professionals.
  • Strong project management expertise.
  • Experience in a multi-entity organization with interconnected businesses.
