Join our team as a Nurse in the Cardiac Care Unit

Responsibilities of the Registered Nurse in the Cardiac Care Unit include:

  • Deliver nursing care to critically ill patients with complex needs, often requiring life-support systems, and those recovering from anesthesia, both autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Enhance the quality of life from the viewpoint of patients and their families.
  • Engage in consultation and collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
  • Exhibit leadership and proficiency in nursing practices.
  • Continuously maintain and improve your clinical skills.
  • Participate in designated hospital committees and approved research initiatives as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Active registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of an accredited critical care nursing program or two years of recent, relevant critical care experience.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Comprehensive understanding of nursing theory and practice within a patient-centered care model.
  • Familiarity with BCCNM standards for nursing practice.
  • In-depth knowledge of the uses, effects, and side effects of anesthetics and other medications utilized in critical care.
  • Strong understanding of common nursing challenges in critical care settings.
  • Insight into the physiological and psychological aspects of severe critical illnesses.
  • Awareness of various healthcare disciplines and their contributions to patient care.
  • Proven ability to assess and manage critical and life-threatening situations effectively.
  • Capability to respond promptly and appropriately to emergencies.
  • Proficiency in organizing and prioritizing tasks.
  • Ability to develop and implement care plans.
  • Skill in working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Effective communication skills with patients, families, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Competence in written communication, ensuring clarity and conciseness.
  • Ability to educate patients and their families.
  • Leadership capabilities to guide and direct others.
  • Physical capability to fulfill the responsibilities of the role.
  • Proficiency in CPR techniques.
  • Expertise in critical care monitoring and support technologies.
  • Basic computer skills for operating patient care information systems.

Additional Information

Work hours, including days off and specific work areas, may vary based on operational needs and collective agreements.

As part of the current Public Health Orders, all employees of Vancouver Coastal Health are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or have received the most recent single dose of the updated COVID-19 vaccine. Proof of vaccination status will be necessary.
