Position Overview
BC Wheelchair Sports Association is seeking a full-time individual responsible for overseeing Wheelchair Rugby, which includes managing athletes, coach and official development, and hosting tournaments. Additional responsibilities will encompass the 'Bridging the Gap' (BTG) recruitment and retention initiative, special events, community collaborations, and other necessary programs and services. The successful applicant will report directly to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
- Wheelchair Rugby Program Management: Collaborate with coaches, athletes, officials, clubs, and partner organizations to design and implement wheelchair rugby programming, including annual planning, new program development, training camps, clinics, competitions, provincial team programs, equipment management, and sport science.
- Event Coordination: Lead the organization of major tournaments, ensuring all aspects such as sport technicalities, registration, facilities, volunteer management, team communication, and awards are effectively managed.
- Support for Other Events: Assist in the execution of various BCWSA and partner events, contributing to initiatives like the Invictus Games and other significant tournaments.
- Bridging the Gap Program: Strategize and implement sport-specific program delivery, focusing on athlete recruitment, introductory programs, and community engagement.
- Partner Collaboration: Maintain ongoing communication and alignment with local, provincial, and national partners, ensuring effective program delivery.
- Strategic Planning and Reporting: Collaborate with program staff and the Executive Director to develop strategic plans, monitor budgets, and ensure accurate reporting.
- Wheelchair Loan Program: Support the implementation of the BCWSA Wheelchair Loan Program, particularly in relation to wheelchair rugby.
Qualifications & Experience
- A degree in Kinesiology, Sport Administration, or a related field, or equivalent experience in sport programming and athlete development.
- Experience in budget development and reporting.
- Event management experience is essential.
- Familiarity with the BC or Canadian sport system is preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to cultivate and maintain effective professional relationships.
- Capacity to work independently and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends, with some travel required.
- Completion of the BCWSA Screening Process, including a Criminal Record Check.
- A Class 5 driver's license is mandatory; a Class 4 driver's license is an asset.
- Experience working with individuals with physical disabilities is advantageous.
- Knowledge of sports wheelchairs or bicycle mechanics is beneficial.
Working Conditions
- Hybrid work environment; must reside in the region and be willing to commute to the office regularly.
- Full-time position (37.5 hrs/week); availability for flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, is required.
- Physical demands include handling adaptive sport equipment for programming and events.
