Position Overview

Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Senior Estimator plays a pivotal role in managing all bids and estimates for RailWorks Corporation. This position is essential in crafting competitive pricing proposals by executing estimating responsibilities, including bid document organization, take-off preparation for construction initiatives, and thorough research for bid incorporation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review tender documents and participate in pre-bid meetings to ascertain the scope of work and necessary components of estimates.
  • Analyze tender documents, plans, specifications, and other materials to formulate time, cost, materials, and labor estimates.
  • Manage quantity surveys and take-offs as needed.
  • Develop detailed material lists based on tender documents and specifications, forwarding them to the Material Manager for pricing.
  • Review and integrate historical data from previous estimates, purchase agreements, and subcontracts to inform current bids.
  • Evaluate bids from subcontractors for completeness and accuracy regarding the scope of work.
  • Develop scopes of work for subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Solicit pricing from subcontractors/vendors.
  • Prepare submissions and coordinate bid day activities with involved staff.
  • Ensure compliance with tender documents and requirements.
  • Confirm that all general conditions of the tender document are satisfied, including insurance, bonding, and special requirements.
  • Collaborate with management for strategic estimating approaches and feedback on estimates.
  • Lead the bid review process.
  • Create initial construction schedules and cash flow forecasts.
  • Monitor and track upcoming projects within SharePoint, providing weekly updates.
  • Prepare and present project turnover packages upon contract award.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma with post-secondary training in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of relevant estimating experience, preferably in the construction or railway sectors.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret drawings and specifications.
  • Proficient in reviewing contract documents.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent presentation abilities.
  • Capability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities while meeting deadlines.
  • Proficient in using common business and estimating software, including Microsoft Office, Hard Dollar, Explorer, or JD Edwards.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • This is a full-time office position.
  • Occasional weekend or evening work may be necessary.
  • Some exposure to outdoor construction sites in various weather conditions may be required.
  • Most fieldwork occurs around live tracks (trains).
  • Work may take place in urban, rural, or remote areas. Accommodations and transportation will be provided if necessary.
