About the Role

CNA Insurance is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Underwriter to join our team in a Commercial Mid-Market role. As an Underwriter, you will play a critical role in helping us achieve our mission of providing exceptional insurance solutions to our clients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Under technical direction, you will be responsible for underwriting risks in a book of business within Commercial Mid-Market.
  • You will work within specific limits of authority on assignments requiring significant technical complexity and coordination, utilizing underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.
  • Perform a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Review applications and financial requirements for risks requiring complex underwriting skills, determining acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.
  • Determine appropriate pricing based on financial and competitive analysis in line with compliance requirements.
  • Prepare quotes and answer questions from brokers, policyholders, or other external contacts, escalating issues to management as necessary.
  • Notify brokers of adverse underwriting decisions, rate changes, underwriting requirements, status, and declinations.
  • Analyze quality, quantity, and profitability of risks underwritten and prepare reports for management review.
  • Market products and services through the brokerage community and make field visits, developing and maintaining broker relationships.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other underwriters and to other functional areas, particularly when related to cross-sell opportunities.
  • Stay current on provincial and federal issues and regulations, industry activity, and trends, and freely share information with others.
  • Utilize advanced functionality in relevant CNA systems to perform day-to-day activities.
  • Work with specialists or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
Requirements
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.
  • Demonstrated high level of technical expertise and product-specific knowledge.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively interact with all levels of CNA's internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make critical business decisions effectively.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Professional designations preferred.
  • Typically a minimum five years underwriting experience.
What We Offer

CNA Insurance offers a comprehensive and competitive benefits package, including a base pay range of $95,000 to $120,000 annually. Salary determinations are based on various factors, including relevant work experience, skills, and certifications.
