What is Grafana Cloud?

Grafana Cloud is our flexible observability platform that unifies metrics, logs, and traces with Grafana. It empowers our clients to utilize the finest open-source observability tools – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, and Tempo – without the burden of setting up, managing, and scaling their own observability infrastructure.

The Observability department is dedicated to equipping developers with the insights needed to assess the health and performance of their applications and infrastructure across various environments. We provide tools to instrument their code, ingest observability data into Grafana Cloud, and visualize and analyze it effectively.

Grafana Alloy is an open-source OpenTelemetry Collector distribution that features integrated Prometheus pipelines and supports metrics, logs, traces, and profiles. The Alloy team collaborates with the upstream OpenTelemetry collector community on the components included in our distribution. We also address use cases that extend beyond OpenTelemetry, such as the integration of Prometheus exporters.

What will you be doing?

At Grafana Labs, individual contributors have a defined career path and are not required to transition into management roles to advance. The Principal Software Engineer position is a leadership role for individual contributors, expected to have director-level scope with technical expertise.

  • Guide and steer the technical direction of the Alloy project, while leading discussions on the data ingestion strategy at Grafana Labs.
  • Actively participate in the OpenTelemetry collector SIG. Alloy shares numerous components with the upstream OpenTelemetry collector project. We aim to support OpenTelemetry's success and be proactive members of the OpenTelemetry collector SIG, leading by example and encouraging others to engage.
  • Possess familiarity with the Prometheus ecosystem and assist in maintaining the Prometheus exporters included in Alloy.
  • Be a visible presence. Educate others, advocate for best practices, share knowledge, and establish the relationship of Alloy within the Prometheus and OpenTelemetry ecosystems, both within Grafana Labs and at community events.
  • Collaborate with GTM (go-to-market). Engage in discussions with prospects and customers when product expertise is required, involving solutions engineering, customer success, and professional services.
  • Drive cross-department initiatives to ensure that Alloy-ingested data aligns with the requirements of our databases (Mimir, Loki, Tempo) and applications built on these databases.
  • Participate in on-call rotations. Engage in on-call duties for our Alloy deployments and lead operational enhancements.

Given our remote-first approach and the largely remote nature of our engineering organization, we emphasize the importance of an independent mindset and strong communication skills.

What are we looking for in you?

  • At Grafana Labs, we assess senior roles based on their business impact rather than solely on expertise or specific activities. The key quality we seek in a principal engineer is the ability to take ownership and drive both technical and business discussions at a director-level scope.
  • A passion for observability and a willingness to share knowledge through documentation and blog posts.
  • A genuine interest in engaging with customers and assisting them.
  • Exceptional communication skills.
  • Relevant open-source experience, preferably in OpenTelemetry or Prometheus.
  • A commitment to becoming an active member of the OpenTelemetry community.
  • A solid understanding of production environments, ideally with experience in managing production infrastructure and services, including organizing on-call duties.
  • A proactive approach to mentoring team members, identifying areas for growth and improvement.

Compensation: In Canada, the base compensation range for this role is CAD 188,000 - CAD 225,000. Actual compensation may vary based on level, experience, and skillset as assessed in the interview process. Benefits include equity, bonuses (if applicable), and other listed benefits.
