As the inaugural Senior Tax Analyst at Thinkific, you will play a pivotal role within a high-performing accounting team. Reporting directly to the Controller, you will serve as our internal tax authority, collaborating with various departments to oversee a spectrum of tax initiatives, ensure compliance, and help shape our overall tax strategy.
Your primary objective will be to oversee our tax compliance and collaborate on several prominent projects. Here’s how you will achieve this:
Manage the sales tax remittance process by utilizing billing data from Stripe to submit sales tax returns across the US (via Avalara), Canada, and UK/EU. Reconcile tax liability accounts and perform monthly journal entries using Workday. Support sales tax initiatives by overseeing Thinkific's collection and remittance on behalf of clients, while providing escalation assistance for the customer service team. Prepare transfer pricing journal entries, manage inter-company agreements, and identify optimization opportunities. Conduct research and offer recommendations on relevant tax issues (corporate, transfer pricing, marketplace facilitator regulations in various countries). Evaluate sales tax on all revenue streams (subscriptions and Commerce) and registration in necessary future jurisdictions. Prepare the year-end corporate tax documentation. Act as the primary contact for year-end audits and quarterly reviews regarding all tax-related inquiries. Oversee the distribution of 1099k forms. Identify and undertake ad-hoc projects as necessary.The ideal candidate will likely possess:
Over 5 years of tax experience, with a preference for 2 years post-designation experience. A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Previous experience at a Big 4 accounting firm. A CPA designation. Advanced proficiency in Excel or Google Sheets, with comfort in handling large datasets. A proactive mindset, critical thinking skills, and the ability to solve problems independently. Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, coupled with strong time management and communication abilities. A passion for innovation and continuous improvement in tax processes. A commitment to personal and professional growth, actively seeking opportunities to enhance skills in this field through education or experience.Additional skills that would be beneficial, but can be learned on the job:
Experience in the technology sector. Familiarity with Workday Financials. Knowledge of Stripe or other payment processing systems. Understanding of Avalara.Compensation for this position ranges from $99,000 to $124,000 CAD. Your specific compensation within this range will be based on your job-related skills, knowledge, experience, and our internal equity assessment.
