Claims Counsel

The Law Society of British Columbia is seeking a highly skilled Claims Counsel to join our team. As a Claims Counsel, you will play a critical role in managing and defending professional liability claims against lawyers in British Columbia.
Key Responsibilities- Investigate and Analyze Claims: Conduct thorough investigations into professional negligence and theft claims against lawyers, determining the applicability of indemnity coverage and developing strategies to effectively resolve claims.
- Defend Claims: Act as defence counsel and manage the defence of actions by outside counsel, utilizing your expertise in litigation and advocacy to achieve successful outcomes.
- Develop and Implement Strategies: Collaborate with stakeholders to develop and implement strategies to prevent losses and negotiate settlements, ensuring the best possible outcomes for the Law Society and its members.
- Provide Expertise and Guidance: Share your knowledge and expertise with colleagues and stakeholders, providing guidance on practice and risk issues to help prevent losses and promote a culture of excellence.
- Qualifications: You must be a member in good standing of the Law Society of BC with a minimum of five years of recent litigation experience. An excellent reputation in the legal community is essential.
- Skills and Abilities: You possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong analytical abilities, superior advocacy and sound judgment. You take a practical approach to issues and have superior writing skills, with the ability to work effectively in stressful situations.
The Law Society of British Columbia is a professional organization that regulates the legal profession in British Columbia. We provide indemnification to all lawyers in private practice in the province and some in-house lawyers at their option. Our organization has over $190 million in assets, an annual budget of $22 million, and manages over 1,000 reports of claims and potential claims against lawyers each year.
