At PHSA, we are committed to providing comprehensive cancer care to the people of British Columbia. As an Indigenous Patient Navigator, you will play a vital role in supporting the integration of Indigenous cultural safety into our healthcare services.
Key Responsibilities- Provide consultative and navigational services to patients referred to PHSA programs and services, ensuring cultural interpretation and health literacy translation services are available.
- Support access and coordination of services for patients within the designated region, coordinating client referrals to and from interagency, Indigenous communities, and other health programs and services.
- Provide client support services within the hospital care system/community, assessing client needs and ability to access and receive culturally-safe care.
- Advocate for the needs of patients within the healthcare system, liaising with other community and regional health organizations to improve patient care.
- Support connection to community services, such as Indigenous translators, and arrange language and cultural translation services as necessary.
- Maintain and update documentation and records related to the needs of Indigenous patients in the healthcare system.
- Support the development of regional strategies to improve care for Indigenous patients, engaging Indigenous communities and organizations in the process.
- Diploma or degree in a related health discipline, health or social sciences, or a patient care/clinical related discipline.
- One to three years' recent related experience working in Indigenous healthcare.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations.
- Extensive knowledge of Indigenous peoples' demographics, languages, cultures, customs, and traditions.
- Demonstrated knowledge, understanding, and application of cultural safety and competency within healthcare.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
