Job Overview

The City of Ottawa's Legal Services department is dedicated to delivering a comprehensive array of legal assistance to elected officials, various city departments, and affiliated boards and commissions. Our focus encompasses areas such as civil litigation, labor and employment law, prosecutions, and a variety of legal domains including corporate, municipal, planning, development, environmental, and commercial law.

As a vital member of our team, you will engage in a diverse range of legal responsibilities, which may include:

  • Managing real estate transactions, including the establishment of easement rights and the acquisition or disposal of properties.
  • Drafting, executing, and registering agreements related to land development and planning.
  • Preparing and managing contracts for transportation, utilities, and various services.
  • Overseeing construction contracts and leases, ensuring compliance and execution.
  • Coordinating civil litigation processes and collecting outstanding debts owed to the city.
  • Developing and administering municipal by-laws.

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should possess a two-year diploma in Legal Assistant (Law Clerk) or equivalent certification from the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario, along with a minimum of six years of relevant legal experience.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficient understanding of various legal statutes and acts relevant to municipal law.
  • Strong organizational skills and familiarity with legal office practices.
  • Competence in using Microsoft Suite and other legal databases.
  • Awareness of financial principles and health and safety legislation.

Competencies and Abilities

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to draft legal documents and agreements with precision.
  • Effective interpersonal skills and a capacity for conflict resolution.
