Position Title: Lifeguard / Swim Instructor

Department: Recreation

Employment Status: Full Time, 1 Year Term

Annual Salary: $55,166.10, based on a 35 hour work week

Allowance: $20,907.43 per annum

Union Affiliation: Unionized

Role Overview:

The Lifeguard / Swim Instructor will report directly to the Aquatics Program Supervisor and is tasked with ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all guests within the aquatic facility. This role requires vigilance in monitoring pool activities, adherence to safety protocols, and the delivery of exceptional customer service. The individual will be responsible for instructing various swimming programs and performing rescues and first aid as necessary.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum age of 16 years with completion of grade 10;
  • National Lifeguard Service Award;
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor certification;
  • First Aid and CPR – C certification;
  • Vision Requirement: Candidates must meet the vision standard of a minimum of 20/25 corrected, as determined by the City of Iqaluit.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Proficient in both written and verbal communication;
  • Capability to perform skills to the NLS standard;
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, and split shifts;
  • Commitment to maintaining required certifications.

Additional Assets:

  • WHMIS Certification;
  • Pool Operations Level 1 certification;
  • First Aid and CPR Instructor certification;
  • High Five (PCD) certification;
  • Aquafit Certification (CALA, Canfit, Waterart);
  • NCCP Coaching Level 1 certification;
  • Experience with Recreation Management Systems;
  • Proficiency in English and Inuktitut, both written and spoken.

Important Note:

The successful candidate will be required to provide a clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector screening, along with satisfactory TB Screening.
