Position Overview
The Government of Alberta is seeking a strategic leader to fill the role of Manager of Investigations within the Occupational Health and Safety Program Delivery. This position is integral to ensuring the safety and compliance of workplaces across the Northeast Region.

Role Summary
As the Manager of Investigations, you will oversee a dedicated team responsible for investigating all reportable incidents in accordance with Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety legislation. Your leadership will guide Lead Investigators, a Technical Advisor, and an Investigations Assistant in addressing serious incidents, injuries, and fatalities that occur in various work environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the management team to uphold consistent and credible practices within the unit and across the branch.
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for all incident investigation activities in the region.
  • Ensure quality assurance for all investigations conducted within the region.
  • Manage resource allocation effectively to meet the needs of the investigations team.

Stakeholder Engagement
The Manager will liaise with various internal and external stakeholders, including staff, OHS Compliance, and third-party experts, ensuring a comprehensive approach to incident investigations.

Essential Skills

  • Proficient in interpreting and applying legislation, providing support and quality assurance on complex investigations.
  • Expertise in investigative and regulatory enforcement functions, including evidence management and prosecution recommendations.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervisory or management roles, with strong coaching and mentorship capabilities.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, including effective listening and organizational abilities.

Qualifications
A university degree in a relevant field, along with four years of recent experience in investigations and legislation interpretation, is required. Proven leadership experience in mentoring and coaching is also essential.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to obtain a Peace Officer appointment under the Alberta Peace Officer Act.

Assets

  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation.
  • Familiarity with courtroom procedures and laws of evidence.
  • Experience in preparing court briefs and managing contracts.
  • Project management experience and political acumen.
