Job Summary

The University of Waterloo is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Research Facility Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Giga-to-Nanoelectronics (G2N) Lab. This is a unique opportunity to lead a world-class facility and contribute to cutting-edge research in nanocrystalline silicon technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Facilities Management
    • Coordinate access to equipment and the G2N lab for outside users
    • Control secure access to laboratory facilities and maintain the RFID card access system
    • Administer the distribution of key cards and ensure the day-to-day needs of the laboratory are met
    • Carry out maintenance operations and negotiate the purchase of new equipment
    • Consult with graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, faculty, and external clients on current and future projects
  • Financial Oversight
    • Ensure the G2N Lab operates on a revenue-neutral basis
    • Billing of users not affiliated with G2N is performed on a regular basis
    • Work collaboratively with faculty members to plan and procure items and attend to paperwork
    • Source major assets for laboratory upgrades and expansion
  • Health & Safety
    • Ensure researchers receive necessary training on safety and laboratory procedures
    • Train laboratory technical staff according to their needs and with respect to safety
    • Delegate tasks to technical staff and verify their completion
    • Ensure adherence to established procedures for equipment operation
  • Human Resources Management
    • Keep records of staff performance and attendance
    • Schedule workloads of staff to meet deadlines
    • Conduct yearly performance appraisals of technical staff
    • MEDIATE conflicts between technical laboratory staff and other users
Qualifications
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, or Materials Science
  • 10+ years' experience in industrial research and manufacturing with a strong background in Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, and Materials Science
  • Strong background in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing high vacuum systems
  • Excellent familiarity with precision optical systems, furnace technology, electronic controllers, robotics, gas delivery systems, and metrology tools
  • Capable of operating and maintaining complex and delicate equipment
  • Familiarity with hazardous gas monitoring systems
  • Strong background in process development, materials processing, and characterization
  • Experience in process development for electronic and optoelectronic devices
  • Thin-film device processing and characterization
  • Experience in process recipe development for semiconductor materials synthesis and processing
  • Industrial experience in the manufacturing of electronic devices
  • Industrial and academic research experience in the development of novel electronic materials and devices
