Position Overview
Halifax Independent School (HIS) is on the lookout for a dedicated individual to enhance our internal and external communication and marketing strategies. This newly created role offers opportunities for growth and adaptation based on the skills of the successful applicant and the evolving needs of the school community. While this position is primarily on-site, we are open to flexible work arrangements.

Key Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist will play a vital role in the daily management and execution of the school's communication strategies. Responsibilities include promoting and safeguarding the school's reputation through effective public relations initiatives, event coordination, internal and external communications, and website management. The role will involve engaging key audiences through compelling narratives and targeted communication efforts, supporting HIS in achieving its vision and enhancing its positive influence on education and the community.

By sharing the achievements and stories of students, staff, and alumni, the Communications Specialist will collaborate with the communications team to highlight the dynamic culture and leadership at HIS, showcasing the impactful contributions that define our institution.

The Communications Specialist will report directly to the Headteacher and will provide support to the Headteacher, board members, and both administrative and teaching staff.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Basic design tasks
  • Content creation, primarily for web platforms
  • Assisting in the creative development, coordination, scheduling, production, and distribution of various internal and external communication materials
  • Management and development of website content
  • Supporting the organization of internal and external events, including planning and preparation of communication materials
  • Coordinating online and in-person events, including on-the-day support
  • Photography or coordination of photography/videography for school events
  • Management and organization of photo/video archives
  • Responding to basic IT support inquiries from parents, students, and staff
  • Sharing Google Workspace documents and assisting with access issues
  • Maintaining and implementing the school's social media calendar, including content development
  • Utilizing social media to promote school events, milestones, and news
  • Managing general email and website inquiries
  • Engaging with alumni

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in public relations, journalism, marketing, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in a similar role
  • Experience in internal and external communications, social media strategy, basic design, writing, event management, and basic IT support
  • Proficiency in managing collaborative digital resources, including controlled access documents and media files
  • Exceptional writing skills, particularly for web content
  • Strong organizational and technical abilities
  • Professional demeanor suitable for a pre-primary to grade 9 educational environment
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with staff, students, parents, and alumni
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented, and dynamic setting, with a willingness to assist where needed
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work for meetings and special events
  • Recent results from a Criminal Record Check with VSS and a Child Abuse Registry Check are required upon hiring

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a Google Workspace environment
  • Basic photography/videography skills
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Canva
  • Experience with email marketing platforms like Mailerlite
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle

Pay: $24.00-$28.00 per hour
