Overview of Responsibilities

As a key member of the Environmental Services team, the selected candidate will report directly to the Manager/Supervisor of Environmental Services (Strategic Projects) and will be responsible for the following:

  • Prioritize Safety: Ensure that safety is the foremost concern in all project activities.
  • Project Leadership: Oversee essential environmental management tasks and deliverables throughout the entire project lifecycle.
  • Class EA Management: Serve as the primary lead on a comprehensive Class Environmental Assessment (EA) in accordance with the Class EA for Transmission Facilities, ensuring all components are successfully executed. This includes:
    • Engaging and managing environmental consultants;
    • Developing Project Notices and implementing innovative engagement strategies;
    • Facilitating meaningful interactions with Indigenous communities, regulatory bodies, stakeholders, and the public, while ensuring compliance with Hydro One policies;
    • Organizing Public Information Centres (both virtual and in-person);
    • Conducting public speaking engagements and addressing inquiries from various interest groups;
    • Tracking consultations with rights holders and stakeholders;
    • Identifying and evaluating environmental features, constraints, alternatives, potential impacts, and mitigation strategies;
    • Producing a comprehensive Environmental Study Report and related documentation, including presentation materials;
    • Establishing a transparent and repeatable EA planning process.
  • Environmental Expertise: Exhibit a thorough understanding of diverse environmental disciplines relevant to infrastructure projects, including natural heritage, cultural heritage/archaeology, and soil and groundwater management.
  • Contract Management: Procure necessary environmental studies, prepare detailed RFPs, assess proposals, and manage consultant contracts effectively, ensuring quality and cost efficiency.
  • Work Planning: Develop and monitor environmental work plans, budget estimates, and timelines.
  • Data Accuracy: Ensure the precise application of technical data.
  • Field Monitoring: Conduct site visits to oversee environmental aspects of capital projects as needed.
  • Documentation: Prepare and review Environmental Due Diligence Reports and Environmental Protection Plans to support new electrical infrastructure initiatives.
  • Consultant Oversight: Review Contractor Environmental Management Plans.
  • Information Management: Organize and file project information systematically within existing platforms.
  • Advisory Role: Provide guidance to project managers and construction teams regarding environmental legislation and corporate policies.
  • Conflict Resolution: Engage in negotiations to address conflicts and make informed decisions on behalf of the organization.
  • Strategic Engagement: Approach interactions with stakeholders and agencies with respect and compliance, prioritizing the organization's interests.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor and review the work of junior environmental planners and engineers, focusing on quality outcomes.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about advancements in environmental management practices.
  • Technical Presentation: Prepare and deliver technical information to various audiences.
  • Leadership by Example: Adhere to internal protocols and demonstrate a consistent approach.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A four-year degree in environmental studies, planning, natural sciences, or a related discipline.
  • A minimum of six to eight years of relevant experience in environmental planning, management, and monitoring.
  • Proven experience leading complex Class EAs for infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of environmental legislation and requirements.
  • Experience in environmental studies across various disciplines.
  • Familiarity with obtaining environmental permits and working with regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in ArcGIS or similar mapping software.
  • Strong project management and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Valid Ontario driver's license.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Travel Requirements:

This position may require travel to various project locations as necessary, with expectations for site visits and participation in meetings.
